Newly Appointed Minister Of Defence, Aliyu Gusau Resigns

Reports by SaharaReporters have it that the newly appointed Minister of Defence, General Aliyu Gusau (rtd) has resigned his appointment.

It would be recalled that Gusau was confirmed by the Senate just last week after his name had been sent alongside other ministerial nominees by President Jonathan.

Since last week, there had been rumours that Gusau wanted more responsibilities to be added to his portfolio.

One of such requests is having the National Security Adviser report to him directly rather than to President Jonathan.

The last straw that was said to have broke the camel's back was when a meeting between Gusau, his deputy, Musiliu Obanikoro, was rejected by top shots at the Nigerian military. Only one Service Chief reportedly showed up for the meeting, a move which infuriated the Minister, and got further compounded when the Service Chief traded words with Musiliu Obanikoro.

Attempts by the Senate President to persuade the Minister is said to have hit the rocks as he remained adamant on throwing in the towel.
