“I kidnapped my Oga’s son because he refused to settle me,’’ a 20-year-old suspect, Blessing Emmanuel, said on Monday in Lagos.

The suspect made the confession on the sidelines of a briefing by the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Mr. Fatai Owoseni, on criminal activities in the state.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the suspect admitted being the mastermind of the alleged abduction of his boss’ son.

PUNCH Metro had reported on Thursday that Chinobi Sabestine and Emmanuel were arrested by the police for allegedly abducting a 10-year-old boy.

It was reported that the suspects were apprehended in a bank in the Oyingbo area of the state as they were about withdrawing the ransom paid by the boy’s family into an account.

Emmanuel, who claimed to be a trader at the Mandilas Market, Lagos Island, claimed that he abducted the 10-year-old in the Alafia area of Orile-Iganmu, on his way to school, as a way of paying his master back for refusing to settle him after working for him for four years.

“I started staying with my Oga in 2013. He took me from my parents to stay with him so that I could learn how to sell clothes. In the agreement he had with my parents before he took me, he promised to set me up after four years.

“In 2016, he was supposed to help me start my own business; but instead, he opened another shop and asked me to be paying him N20,000 monthly.

“I could not cope because of the recession in the country, so I asked him to pay me as agreed, but he refused. Rather, he sent me back to the village.

“I came back early January and I stayed in a hotel. It was there that the idea of kidnapping his son came to me. Last week Monday, around 7am, I laid in ambush along the route where his son normally passed to school in the Alafia area of Orile.

“The boy emerged around 7.45am. He came to me when I called him and I took him away,” the suspect said.

The suspect further explained that he kept the young boy in his hotel room for four days, until he was arrested on Apapa Road.

“Throughout the four days, the boy stayed with me in my hotel room at Oyingbo. I called my Oga on the telephone the next day to pay N5m into my account if he hoped to see his son again. I sent him my account number.

“I was on my way to collect my ATM card from the bank on Apapa Road when I was arrested. I never knew that the police were on my trail,” he added.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, while briefing newsmen on the arrest, said the suspect, along with one other, kidnapped the 10-year-old boy.

He said after kidnapping their victim, the suspects demanded N5m as ransom to release the boy.

President Donald Trump fired acting Attorney General Sally Yates Monday night for "refusing to enforce a legal order designed to protect the citizens of the United States," the White House said.

"(Yates) has betrayed the Department of Justice," the White House statement said.
Dana Boente, US attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, the White House said, and was sworn in at 9 p.m. ET, per an administration official.
Trump didn't call Yates to dismiss her, she was informed by hand-delivered letter, according to a different administration official.
The dramatic move came soon after CNN reported Yates told Justice Department lawyers not to make legal arguments defending Trump's executive order on immigration and refugees.

The move set up a clash between the White House and Yates, who was appointed by President Barack Obama and was set to serve until Sen. Jeff Sessions, Trump's nominee for attorney general, is confirmed.
"My responsibility is to ensure that the position of the Department of Justice is not only legally defensible, but is informed by our best view of what the law is after consideration of all the facts," she said in a letter. "In addition, I am responsible for ensuring that the positions we take in court remain consistent with this institution's solemn obligation to always seek justice and stand for what is right."
Trump's executive order, signed Friday, bars citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries from entering the United States for the next 90 days, suspends the admission of all refugees for 120 days and indefinitely suspends the Syrian refugee program. Yates' decision came amid a flood of protests against the executive order nationwide and after four federal judges ruled against Trump's order, staying its impact on people who were detained at US airports over the weekend.

Trump tweeted his response shortly after the news broke, saying Democrats have stymied Sessions' confirmation, enabling Yates.

"The Democrats are delaying my cabinet picks for purely political reasons. They have nothing going but to obstruct. Now have an Obama A.G.," he said.

"At present, I am not convinced that the defense of the executive order is consistent with these responsibilities nor am I convinced that the executive order is lawful," Yates wrote.
Yates' decision was always likely to be extremely short-lived as Sessions is scheduled for a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
White House policy director Stephen Miller, who helped craft the executive order, called Yates' decision "a further demonstration of how politicized our legal system has become."
The US ban: Why these 7?
"It's sad that our politics have become so politicized, that you have people refusing to enforce our laws," Miller said Monday night on MSNBC.
Miller also defended the executive order's legality, insisting that the Immigration and Nationality Act gives the President "the ability to exclude any class of would-be visitors or immigrants to our country based on our national security interests."

But the decision didn't face the same criticism from Rep. Pete Sessions, a top House Republican, who said Yates' decision was likely similar "to an evaluation that we made."
"And that was it did not appear to be specific in nature," Sessions said referring to the executive order. "So it may be a matter of clarity it may be a matter of illegality to him, it may be a matter of several things. It did not look as complete and succinct as what I think I would've wanted."
Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, praised Yates for standing up "on principle."
"In all my years as a member of Congress, which now is 21, I've met so many very principled people who truly believe in the Constitution and doing what is right," Approaching said. "There comes a time when people, no matter who may be their boss, they stand upon their principles, so at the end of the day they can look them selves in the mirror and say 'I synchronized my conduct with my conscience.' And Yates is such a person."
Currently, there are cases filed in at least five states including Virginia, New York, Massachusetts, Washington and California that are challenging Trump's order.
The decision effectively grounds the executive order for the next few days until Sessions is sworn in.

"This will be moot. Then we will very much see the Trump Justice Department led by Jeff Sessions defend this executive order pretty vigorously. And then it will be up to the courts," said Steve Vladeck, a CNN contributor and law professor at the University of Texas School of Law.
Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told CNN's Erin Burnett Monday the Justice Department decision reflects poorly on the Trump administration.
"When you do something as important as this, it can't be a Twitter-type of activity," Schumer said. "This has to be thoroughly vetted ... and it's a very bad omen for this presidency."
Activists who have led the fight against Trump's immigration ban lauded Yates' action Monday night.
"We took to the court room, people took to the streets and now principled federal officials are drawing a hardline on this shameful and unconstitutional act by President Trump. This is what we rely on the Department of Justice for, to uphold the rule of law no matter how the political wind is blowing," said Karen Tumlin, the National Immigration Law Center's legal director.
Lee Gelernt, the American Civil Liberties Union lawyer who argued against the immigration ban in court in New York, praised Yates' decision and called on the next attorney general to "continue with that policy."
"This ban will do irreparable damage to real people and to American values," he said.

Palpable fear has enveloped the families of three friends, Veronica Otogo, Bisola Mohammed and Damilola Oribuyaku, allegedly abducted by yet-to-be-identified men in Wuse II, Abuja.

Veronica was said to have marked her 24th birthday on Friday and had gone to Cold Stone, a creamery on Kumasi Crescent Wuse II, with her friend, Mohammed, around 6pm.

PUNCH Metro learnt that they drove a Highlander, which had also yet to be found, to the creamery.

But a CRV owned by 29-year-old Damilola, was reportedly found near the place with a broken windscreen, which gave an impression that the three friends had met and were abducted at the spot.

Mohammed was said to have travelled from Lagos, where she lives, to visit Veronica in Abuja.

Veronica’s elder sister, Geraldine Otogo, told our correspondent on the telephone on Sunday that Damilola had sent a birthday message to Veronica a few hours before she and Mohammed left for Cold Stone.

She said, “They have not been found and we have not heard anything about their whereabouts. I have a shop in Wuse II. We came back from the shop around 5pm and bought cake and some other things for the family. Bisola (Mohammed), who came to visit Veronica from Lagos, said she wanted to buy cake for Veronica. They left for Cold Stone to get the cake at about 6pm.

“My house is in Dawaki. My thought was that if they were going to Cold Stone, it should be the one in Gwarinpa. I never knew they could go to Wuse II. They were with one Damilola at Cold Stone. I don’t think he is Veronica’s friend because she had never mentioned his name to me before. I also asked her friends here in Abuja; none of them could identify Damilola as her friend. Probably, he is Bisola’s friend.

“Damilola is also missing, but his family had found his car opposite Cold Stone with a broken windscreen. A lady called me at about 11pm yesterday (Saturday) and said her friend actually saw Bisola, Veronica and Damilola at Cold Stone in Wuse II on Friday. A man also called me that his brother (Damilola) was missing.”

Geraldine added that the incident was reported at Zone 4, Maitama and Gwarinpa police stations.

Damilola’s sister, Jumoke Oribuyaku, said the victims were probably whisked away by abductors in Veronica’s Jeep, adding that her brother never had a disagreement with anyone.

She said, “We don’t have information about his whereabouts for now, but we have been able to establish that he had a connection with two other girls (Veronica and Mohammed). They got missing at the same spot. Veronica was celebrating her birthday and he left his place of work.

“We were able to find out that he sent a message to Veronica that day to wish her a happy birthday. We found his car vandalised around Cold Stone. So, we thought whoever did that probably put three of them in another vehicle. Veronica and Damilola are friends.”

When contacted on the telephone to know whether the management of Cold Stone was aware of the incident, an official, who declined to give her name, said, “No comment sir. Thank you; have a wonderful day.”

The Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, ASP Anjuguri Menzah, said investigations had commenced into the case.

He said, “We received a report of a case of missing persons. We have opened up investigations at various divisions where complaints were lodged. The command’s Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department is coordinating the investigation process.”

The Federal Operations Unit of the Nigeria Customs Service on Monday said it intercepted a Mack truck along the Mile 2 Apapa Road containing 49 boxes of pump-action rifles.

The manifest that followed the truck stated that it carried still doors, before the customs officials discovered otherwise.

The Comptroller-General of the NCS, Col. Hameed Ali, said investigations were ongoing, adding that some suspects had been arrested.

‎EKITI State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum, Ayodele Fayose, has warned the Department of State Services over the planned detention and trial of Apostle Johnson Suleiman of the Omega Fire Ministries Worldwide and the General Overseer of Living Faith Church Worldwide International, popularly known as Winners’ Chapel International, Bishop David Oyedepo.

Fayose described the move by the DSS as an indirect invitation to religious crisis in the country.

Governor Fayose alleged: “There is plan to charge Apostle Suleiman and Bishop Oyedepo for incitement and attempt to cause public disorder on Friday, and make sure that they are not granted so to get them remanded in Kuje Prison perpetually.”

He said this plan was to humiliate these men of God as well as silence them and create fear in other people that may want to speak against the heinous crime against humanity being committed daily, while perpetrators are being shielded by the Federal Government.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said the DSS should tell Nigerians how many of the Fulani herdsmen that killed thousands of Nigerians across the country have been arrested before going after Nigerians who merely expressed their frustration over the to failure of the Federal Government to protect them.

The governor said: “Even though the DSS has allowed commonsense to prevail by properly inviting Apostle Suleiman as against the gestapo manner with which the service attempted to abduct him last week Wednesday, it is still questionable that the DSS is more interested in a man who threatened to defend himself against any attack by Fulani herdsmen rather than those herdsmen that murdered thousands of Nigerians.

“It is sad and worrisome that after muzzling opposition politicians, judiciary and the press, the APC led federal government has taking its desperation to suppress dissenting voices in the country to the House of God.

“If the DSS had acted swiftly like it is doing on Apostle Suleiman so-called inciting comments when people were being killed by herdsmen across the country, so many lives would have been saved.”

Fayose advised the government and the DSS not to go ahead with these plans as it will heat up the polity and threaten the peaceful coexistence of Nigerians, calling on well meaning Nigerians to prevail on the Federal Government to desist from acts capable of throwing the country into further crisis.

Governor Fayose, who reiterated his call for the release of the head of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, who has been in detention since late 2015 despite a court ruling that he should be released, affirmed that he “will continue to stand for Nigeria and its people, not for any religion and it is my position that rights of all Nigerians must be respected and protected”.

The governor urged the APC-led Federal Government to pay attention to the economy it destroyed, with the aim to revamping it and saving Nigerians from the hunger ravaging the land.

He said: “Nigeria is already being ravaged by war of hunger, economic recession, job loss and lack of leadership direction. It will be disastrous for the country to be plunged into religious crisis.

“Apart from during the civil war, Nigerians have not been badly divided as a nation as we are under the President Muhammadu Buhari administration. Killings under this government in 18 months are more than what was witnessed in the last 20 years.”‎

Benue State capital, Markurdi, was thrown into mourning last Friday after the discovery of a lifeless body of a mother of two said to have drowned herself in River Benue due to her inability to repay the loan of N400,000 she invested in MMM.

Husband of 34-year-old mother of two, Gloria Samson, said he didn’t have any inkling that his wife planned to kill herself.

Speaking in an emotion-laden voice, David Samson told SUNDAY PUNCH that he was aware that his wife was a victim of the money-doubling scheme; Mavrodi Mundial Moneybox otherwise called MMM.

The deceased began the journey to her final resting place at a public cemetery located in Ankpa ward, Makurdi, the state capital, last Friday.

As her corpse, wrapped in a casket, arrived in the cemetery, crowd of mourners wore gloomy faces, women wept profusely and men in teary eyes shook their heads intermittently.

The circumstance surrounding the death of the woman fuelled the agony of the sympathisers who knew the deceased. She lived with her family at Vandeikya Street, Makurdi.

Sources told SUNDAY PUNCH that the woman left home without her phone three days after Christmas and reportedly told her kids to forgive her. She also sent same message to her husband through her children.

It was learnt that few days after she left her home, precisely January 2, the police in Benue discovered a lifeless body floating on River Benue at Wadata area, few kilometers to her residence.

Rescue operations got the floating corpse and deposited the remains at the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi.

Meanwhile, Gloria’s family had searched for her for three weeks until they heard about the corpse the police discovered on River Benue which later turned out to be her.

Samson disclosed that he was aware that his wife took a loan of N400,000 from four different places which she did not invest in her petty business.

He said,

“My wife was into petty trading and she had been collecting soft loan from a micro finance bank to boost her business. Anytime she collected the money, she paid back and in most cases, I was her guarantor.
“You know women sometimes keep secret; towards November and December 2016, I discovered she took a loan from four places amounting to N400,000. I do not know what she used the money for because there was nothing in the shop to suggest that she invested the money in her business.
“She did not tell me but what I observed is that my wife developed a cold attitude around the time the report of the freezing of accounts of MMM subscribers in Nigeria went viral. Her attitude changed and she became depressed.”
He stated that the situation lasted till the Christmas period and when he asked her what the problem was, she told him that she was sick and he told her to see a doctor.
“She obliged and was diagnosed of typhoid and malaria and placed on medication. Even on Christmas Day, she could not go to church. A day after Christmas, she complained of pile and I had to buy traditional medicine which she declined to take.
On December 28, 2016 around 11pm, I was at my place of work when my son, Wisdom called me using his mother’s phone number telling me that his mother had left the house since and had yet to return. I told him I was close by and on getting home, I did not see her. I discovered that she left the house with a gown and bathroom slippers.
“I tried to look for her and could not find her. I picked my phone and contacted my siblings and brother-in-law. The following morning, I went to B Police Division to complain but I was told to wait after 24 hours, which I did. On the second day, I was asked to make a statement and leave behind my phone number.’’
The distraught husband further said he did not hear from the police for two weeks and he had to keep searching and informing people in case anyone of them saw his wife.
“Some members of my church including my pastor were aware and kept on interceding for us. This continued until last Tuesday when a woman came to my house and told one of my neighbours that a police woman told her that they discovered the body of a woman floating on River Benue around Wadata area since January 2.
“Immediately I heard this, I was perplexed because something in me told me it might be my wife. I told my neighbour to join me to go to A Division at Wadata. When we got there, the police showed me the picture of the dead woman and I discovered that she was my wife.’’

He told Punch that he was still confused as to what could make his wife to kill herself. He stated,

“My wife loved herself and she could not even allow a razor to touch her body not to talk of going to this length. That is why I said it is more of spiritual attack, but only God knows.
“At the same time, when you look at the whole scenario, there is a conclusion that the money she collected was not invested in her business.’’
Neighbours of the deceased who spoke on condition of anonymity said she became moody shortly after the operators of the MMM froze three million accounts belonging to its Nigerian subscribers early December.

One of them said,

“What we gathered is that she borrowed money from four different places and invested it in MMM. But shortly after MMM froze the accounts of its Nigerian subscribers, she withdrew from people.”
Another neighbour stated,

“The woman was a jovial person but suddenly she withdrew to herself. I even tried to find out what was wrong with her because she was my customer but she did not tell me. She had a shop where she sold petty things. I later gathered that she took a loan from various places but instead of using it for her business, she invested it in MMM and since its collapse, she had refused to talk to anybody.”
One of the late woman’s customers at Wadata market, Makurdi, identified only as Bridget said,

“We met before Christmas and she lamented that she invested the loan she took from a micro finance bank and other sources in an investment that would bring quick and double money (referring to MMM) but the thing collapsed. She threatened that she would run away and I even preached to her not to do so. Since then, I did not see her again only to hear last Tuesday that she drowned herself in River Benue around Wadata.”
When contacted, spokesman for the police in the state, Moses Yamu, confirmed the incident.

“The husband of the deceased had come to claim the corpse,” he said.

The lifeless bodies of two herdsmen declared missing last week were reportedly discovered at a bush around Ossissa community, Ndokwa East Local Government Area, Delta State, by police.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the state command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, told Vanguard that the corpses were found on Saturday, three days after they were declared missing alongside the cattle that were in their possession.

Aniamaka said: “On January 25, at about 10p.m., one Abubakar Abdul, a cattle owner reported that two of his herdsmen were missing around Olor-Ossissa, along with about 140 cattle.

“Following the information, there was a search by the police in the Ashaka Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, the owner of the cattle and members of the local vigilante team.

“It was in the course of the search that they found the two corpses and some of the cows were recovered.
“We are treating it as a case of murder and we are investigating what could have led to the killing of the herdsmen. The case is before the State Criminal Investigating and Intelligence Department, SCIID.”

He stated that no arrest had been made in connection with the killings, adding that the corpses had been deposited in the mortuary of one of the hospitals in Kwale, Ndokwa West Local Government Area of the state.

So for those Nigerians who are used to renewing their visas via drop box, where you send your Passport via mail and collect it via mail, and don't have to do any interviews again after you've been given a US Visa, that has stopped under Donald Trump's administration. Whether you've visited the US one million times before or not, under this new immigration policy, once your visa expires, you have to go do an interview at the embassy again. Read the report below...
In an executive order signed on (Jan. 27), US president Donald Trump instructed the State Department to immediately suspend the US’s Visa Interview Waiver Program.
It’s an interesting action by a president who has made trade a central tenet of his policy platform, since it could, in the short term, inconvenience many frequent visitors to the US (and even dissuade them from visiting) by forcing them to have a face-to-face interview with a US consular officer every time their visa expires rather than simply dropping off their passport at a consulate.

Suspending the program could wreak havoc on US consular operations around the world that handle frequent visits from travelers seeking short term visas. The Visa Interview Waiver Program allows travelers to renew travel authorizations without an in-person interview.

The action is not expected to have any effect on the widely popular Visa Waiver Program, familiar to many by its front-line system, ESTA. That program allows nationals of 38 countries—including much of Europe—to enter the US without securing a visa at a consulate first.

A State department spokesman could not immediately confirm the precise effects of suspending this program, but said that it would announce any changes affecting travelers to the US as soon as possible

The Operatives of Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command,  have arrested a 35 year old man, Abiola Hamzat and his accomplice, Adebayo Kazeem, 32, for stealing 20 bags of cement from a brick making company based in Agbado area of the state.
The suspect was arrested by the Policemen after he had successfully stolen the items from their working place.

The arrested suspect, a father of three, stole the 20 bags of cement from the company a day after he was promoted to the post of a supervisor with a financial reward of N215,000:00 per month.

It was learnt that the suspect who is a university graduate, was lured into the crime out of greed and lack of contentment.

According to sources within the company, Hamzat, a graduate of Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), started work at the factory as a Contract Security from where he rose to become an operator.
"However, he was formally promoted three days ago to the post of a Supervisor, when the company’s management discovered that he was a university graduate," the source added.
He was arrested on last Thursday along with an accomplice after moving 20 bags of cement out of the factory in Agbado area.

Upon his arrival at the RRS' Headquarters, the suspect who owned up to the crime, said  that he masterminded the crime.

In his confessional statement, the suspect said,
"I masterminded the crime but I only co-opted Adebayo into the plan. Initially, Adebayo discouraged me that it was not possible to steal cement at the company.
After so much pressure, he told me to carry the gateman along in order to be successful which I eventually yielded to.... I had an accommodation problem with my family. I was desperately looking for funds to house them. That was what pushed me into it."
According to sources within the company, Hamzat’s new salary as a Supervisor triples his wage as an operator.
While confirming the arrest, the Spokesperson for Lagos State Police Command, Superintendent of Police, Dolapo Badmus, advised companies operating in the state to be vigilant at all time.

The suspects have been transferred to the State Criminal Investigative Department (SCID), Yaba for prosecution.

Housemates in the on-going Big Brother Naija expected an eviction on the show last night, but they were pleasantly surprised as not only was there no eviction, they also got two more people in the house. The two were introduced during a live show anchored by Ebuka Obi.
First runner-up in the third edition of Nigerian Idol, Debbie Rise and actor, Bassey are the new additions to the Big Brother Naija house. Nominations for real eviction will now begin in the new week, but the two new housemates are immuned, just as they are also not allowed to nominate any for possible eviction. Iran Foreign Ministry on Saturday, January 28, 2017, announced that U.S. citizens will be blocked from entering the country in retaliation to Donald Trump’s ban on travellers from seven majority-Muslim countries coming to the US.
'While respecting the American people and distinguishing between them and the hostile policies of the U.S. government, Iran will implement the principle of reciprocity until the offensive U.S. limitations against Iranian nationals are lifted.
'The restrictions against travel by Muslims to America are an open affront against the Muslim world and the Iranian nation in particular and will be known as a great gift to extremists.'
It comes after President Donald Trump on Friday signed an executive order to suspend visas for citizens of Syria, Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.

However, a Federal Judge in New York granted an emergency stay on Saturday night for citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries who have already arrived in the US and those who are in transit, and who hold valid visas, ruling they cannot be removed from the US.

@priscaberry has shared a shocking tale of how a stranger she tried to help robbed in her broad day light! Read Below:

“Yesterday I lost my phone! Sometimes I imagine why people choose to be so deceitful, wicked and mean. This is why the genuine ones don’t get help from people when they are in need. So I was sitting peacefully next my my Bro shop when a gentle looking man who appeared to be stranded walked up to me and pleaded to allow him make a call with my phone, he sounded so desperate and from his appearance, I swear I never suspected anything. He claimed to have lost his phone and wallet on his way so I obliged. I dialed the number and he started making call. I heard him arguing with the person on the end and all. Telling him how he lost his phone and wallet.

” Few seconds later, the number called back and I picked. The caller begged me to direct the guy properly as he can’t hear him cos of the noise and music playing at the background which is true. He pleaded to me to help him get a taxi to where he is, I agreed. The stranded guy introduced himself and told me all the epistles about his job, what he came to do and why he was stranded. I told him to pick a drop that it will be easier and better and he agreed. I gave him#500 for his taxi cos he said he don’t have any other money on him.

“Few seconds later the call came in again and it was for him so I gave him d phone. Before I could say Jack, he disappeared with my phone. Like a magic in the movies I turned and couldn’t find him. I was shocked!!! Like do people still stoop so low these days just to rob people of their valuables? I borrowed a phone and called my line several times, it rang but he refused to pick. Later he turned it off.

“I was mad! Not because it’s d end of the world but how people behave these days baffles me. U can’t even help someone that claims to be in need anymore without getting Urself in some kind of trouble! I lost my laptop/phones/money etc when I was robbed where I served in Calabar so this new phone is just like my laptop/phone cos I have a lot of important files/documents/contacts in it.

“I never regretted trying to “HELP ” someone that turned out to be a thief cos I know that one day, I may need someone’s help. It’s not a sin trying to help.

“You may say that I was careless or not smart, u might be right but all I wanted to do was to help someone since I have enough call credit in my phone. Dear Mr. Nobody, u have actually taken away any misfortune/sorrows that will come my way this year!

“As U have robbed me of that phone, HAPPINESS, PEACE, LOVE AND COMFORT has been robbed from u this year and beyond. Pls be kind enough to steal from someone that won’t spare u until they put a Tyre on Ur neck! It hurts to loose anything in such manner especially in this hard times but I won’t stop doing good! Friends beware of these corporate thieves, they are back in town! Don’t let their innocent looks deceive u!”

The Presidency on Thursday insisted that despite the rumour making the round on President Muhammadu Buhari‘s state of health, the President is not ill.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said this in an interview with CNBC Africa, which was monitored in Abuja.

Adesina insisted that Buhari is only in London, United Kingdom, for vacation and is not in any hospital.

He said, “The President is in London on vacation. He is not in any hospital and he is not ill.

“When he was travelling last week, the statement we put out was that he was going on vacation and during the vacation, he would do routine medical check-up and nothing has changed from what we pushed out last week.

“If anybody has fed something else into the rumour mill, that is just what it is — rumour.”

When asked if Buhari would be willing to talk to Nigerians from the UK, Adesina said such a decision could only be taken by the President himself.

The presidential aide said any attempt to compel Buhari to do so would amount to infringement on his rights.

“The fact that he is a President, he still has his rights. Compelling him to come out and talk will be infringing on his rights.

“The President will talk if he wishes to. If he doesn’t wish to, nobody will compel him to talk.

“The truth is that the President is on vacation and he has given a date on which he will return to work,’’ Adesina said.

The Presidency on Thursday insisted that despite the rumour doing the rounds on President Muhammadu Buhari’s state of health, the President is not ill.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, who said this in an interview with CNBC Africa, which was monitored in Abuja, said Buhari could not be compelled to speak from the United Kingdom.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, however, said the President should speak to Nigerians from the UK.

Adesina insisted that Buhari was only in London, UK, for vacation and was not in any hospital.

He said, “The President is in London on vacation. He is not in any hospital and he is not ill.

“When he was travelling last week, the statement we put out was that he was going on vacation and during the vacation, he would do routine check-up and nothing has changed from what we pushed out last week.

“If anybody has fed something else into the rumour mill, that is just what it is – rumour.”

When asked if Buhari would be willing to talk to Nigerians from the UK, Adesina said the decision could only be taken by the President himself.

The presidential aide said any attempt to compel Buhari to do so would amount to infringement on his rights.

“The fact that he is a President, he still has his rights. Compelling him to come out and talk will be infringing on his rights. The President will talk if he wishes to. If he doesn’t wish to, nobody will compel him to talk.

“The truth is that the President is on vacation and he has given a date on which he will return to work,’’ Adesina said.

Also on Thursday, the Federal Government debunked the rumour doing the rounds that governors met in Abuja on Thursday and deliberated on the health of Buhari.

It said the report was false. It also added that the governors were also not planning to send representatives to London to see the President.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, stated this when he received members of the Presidential Initiative Committee on the North-East, who visited him in Abuja.

Mohammed said there was no need for the alleged visit, stating that the President was merely observing his leave as stated in the letter sent to the Senate before leaving the country.

He called on Nigerians to stop wishing their leaders sickness and death, saying there was nothing wrong with the President.

The minister added, “I would like to use this medium to refute the claim in some quarters that governors would meet in Abuja today (Thursday) and have discussion over the health of the President.

“Those peddling the rumour also claimed that the governors would send emissaries to the President in London.

“The report is false because the governors are not going to meet and will not send any emissary anywhere because the President is hale and hearty.”

Mohammed appealed to Nigerians to stop preaching what he described as hate and also stop wishing their leaders bad things.

He also urged those behind the rumour to stop it forthwith.

NLC asks Buhari to speak to Nigerians

Meanwhile, the NLC has called on the President to speak to Nigerians.

The NLC argued that it would be proper for the President to make a public appearance to dispel rumours in the country about his health.

The General Secretary of the NLC, Dr. Peter Ozo-Eson, told one of our correspondents on Thursday that the President should speak to Nigerians since Nigerians were worried about his health.

He said the President should call the bluff of those peddling orchestrated rumours by publicly addressing the citizenry.

Ozo-Eson said, “In the social media, stories circulate without confirmation; I think that the easiest way is to talk publicly to the nation because the citizens are concerned about their leaders’ whereabouts.

‘If there are those who orchestrated rumours and they are not true, the easiest way is for him to reach out to Nigerians through a public appearance and a statement.

“Nigerians have a right to be certain about the health situation of their President and the people who orchestrate rumours and unsubstantiated reports, one would wish for him to call their bluff by publicly addressing the citizens.”

But the TUC said it would not be necessary for the President to address Nigerians since he had not been away for long.

The President of the TUC, Mr. Bala Kaigama, stated that Buhari demanded a rest and handed over government to the Vice-President.

According to him, Nigerians can talk about the President’s health if he fails to return after the 10-day period of rest he requested.

He said, “Why do we have to make noise about this? He is coming back; if he were to go and stay for a very long time, it is a different thing. If we have patience, he will come back. We are just being unnecessarily demanding.

“This is somebody who demanded a rest and he has handed over the government to the Vice-President. So our concern is how the VP is handling it; but it his health that has become the issue of the moment.

“But we should allow the old man to have his rest. It is normal for somebody of that age to need rest from time to time. If he goes to rest that does not mean that government will not work now. Let the old man enjoy his rest.

“If he does not come back on the day he is supposed to come, that is when can  talk, but for now, let’s allow him to have his rest, why does he have to come and address us? It doesn’t make any sense.”

The Executive Secretary, Anti-corruption Network, Ebenezer Oyetakin, faulted the call for Buhari to address the nation from the UK, describing it as mischief.

He said, “I do not subscribe to that. It smacks of mischief from such people. We are Africans. We have cultural discipline on some issues.

“He has done the appropriate thing by handing over to the VP as Acting President. Let us be patient and maintain a sense of decorum and respect to the institution of governance.’’

Plans have been announced of the increment of fares on all routes of the Lagos State Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) scheme, an operator with Primero Transport Services said.

The company’s Managing Director, Mr Fola Tinubu, made the disclosure in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ikorodu on Thursday.

Tinubu said that the increase, which will take effect from February was as result of its increasing operational cost.

The company has maintained a fare of N75, N120, and N195 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively, since it started operations in November 2015.

According to him, the company will introduce new fares which will take effect between the end of February and early March.

Tinubu said: “we are going to increase our price because of the situation in the country, our cost has just gone through the roof.

“At this time last year, we bought 1.2 million litres of diesel monthly at N120 per litre, we are now buying at N260; tyres that cost N70,000 each now go for N140,000.

“All the parts used for the buses are imported so they’ve all doubled or tripled in price; and we have no choice but to continue to buy them.

“So, in doing that we have to find a way to make it work because you all know that the buses were bought in China; so, we have a foreign dollar component in our debt portfolio.

“When we bought the buses it was N168 to a US dollar and now we are talking of N470 and we still have to pay the dollar component back.

“So, our debt has increased and our cost of operation has gone through the roof, and we have managed to keep the pricing same for now.

“In fact, right now, we are subsidising every person we carry, and if you are running a business, you can only do that for so long.’’

He said though the company was aware of its social responsibility, but the increase in fares was inevitable if its bus services were to be kept on a sustainable footing.

“The airlines have increased their between 200 per cent and 300 per cent but we will not even do 100 per cent.

“So, it is going to be something manageable for people. I will try not to put a figure to that now because the governor still has to approve it, and I don’t want to preempt him.

“What I can say is that it’s going to be a marginal increase and not a drastic increase and still less than what the commercial bus operators are charging right now.

“We are not even going to be close to that; but there is no other solution to it because if we do not, it is going to be recipe for disaster down the road,’’ Tinubu, said.

NAN reports that operators of the yellow-painted commercial bus currently charge N150, N200, and N350 from Ikorodu to Mile 12, Fadeyi, and CMS, respectively.

On the issue of delays caused during drivers changeover, Tinubu said the company had introduced the Early Riser System to check the menace.

“We send a total of 75 buses out at 4.30 so that when majority of the busmen are changing over the early risers are still on the wheels.

“As time goes on, we may increase to 100 buses so that that way it would completely eliminate 1.30 p.m – 2.30 p.m delay issue.

Ekiti State Governor and Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’s Forum, Mr Ayodele Fayose, in the early morning on Wednesday foiled an attempt by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) from arresting Apostle Johnson Suleiman of The Omega Fire Ministries World wide in Ado Ekiti.

The firebrand Pastor was alleged to have been preaching against Islamizing Nigeria and asked members of his church in Auchi, Edo State to resist the killings by suspected Fulani herdsmen, who he alleged of targeting Christians for decimation.

The Pastor who was in Ado Ekiti for a two-day crusade that was also attended by Fayose was trailed after paying a courtesy visit to the governor at the Government House to his hotel room by the operatives of the DSS in Adebayo area of the State capital who almost forced their way to his room but were resisted by security men of the hotel that insisted to know their mission.

Sensing the danger, the Pastor was alerted and he called Governor Fayose who personally led a rescue mission to prevent the abduction of the Pastor and took him to safety.

The Pastor who narrated his ordeal around 2am said,

“I came to Ado Ekiti for a crusade. But I had a premonition that I was being trailed after I preached that Christians should retaliate any attack or killings by the Fulani herdsmen. These Fulani headmen had turned many Christians to orphans and widowers but the time has come to protect ourselves.

“I received several calls from hidden numbers trying to locate where I am and I had warned my security not to allow any Fulani man to come nearer me. So when the men of DSS came in the middle of the night I knew their mission and I had to call the Governor because if they arrest me, they will put this country in fire”.

Governor Fayose, who expressed surprise that a man of God was been trailed to be arrested by the men of DSS said, he expected the security operatives to invite him

“ if they have any issue with him instead of arresting him in the dead of the night after a powerful and spirit-filled crusade in my State. The Governor said,

“I personally attended his crusade and I think it is wrong for a man of God who is armless that could be invited if they have any issue against him. Are Christians and Moslems under different dispensation of the rule of law? . That’s why I went there to rescue him. Let them kill two of us together. But when they saw my vehicles and the crowd, they fled.

“But we have information that instructions came from DSS in Abuja that the Pastor should be arrested. We are not in a fascist state, Federal Government must learn to respect the rights of Nigerians and freedom of expression”.

Governor Fayose noted that it was unbecoming of the Federal Government to be harassing the clergymen in the country noting that the General Overseer of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Pastor Enoch Adeboye was harassed and forced to resign shortly after he visited him in Ado Ekiti. He said,

“This is unacceptable, We are in a democracy and Nigerians should warn the Presidency against putting this country on fire because religion is an emotional thing”. The governor also warned security operatives against intimidation and arrest of men of God in the interest of peace and religious harmony in the country. The constitution guarantees freedom of worship”.

According to Nkechi Bianze,

Guys need to understand that women are polygamous in nature, most especially Nigerian women. It is in the nature of women to cheat.
A recent survey reported that 62% of Nigerian women are unfaithful. That's to tell you that it's in the nature of women, most especially Nigerian women to cheat.

Cheating or not is at the discretion of the wife!

If as a man you find a woman who doesn't cheat on you, then you are just lucky. But stop giving yourself unnecessary heartache checking her phones and keeping a prying eye on her.

If your wife cheats on you, it doesn't mean that she doesn't love you. A woman can love and respect you but still cheat on you. It just means that she wants to explore. As long as she still respects you by at least being discreet with her sexcapades, and still plays her roles as a wife, I see no reason why you should get worked up over it.

I mean, it's not like the vagina is going to disappear or change in colour and shape.

It is stupidity to divorce your wife just because she cheats on you. How many do you want to marry? The next woman might even be worse.
And remember that according to the Bible, if you decide to divorce your wife for any reason at all, you are expected to remain celibate for life, or till she dies.

I hope God gives our men the wisdom to understand that cheating is NOT enough reason to divorce their wives, or even complain at all.

A lady has revealed how a man ejaculated on her, today, while standing on a queue inside a bank in Nnewi area of Anambra State. According to her, after the guy who was close to her released the hot fluid on her leg, she gave him some hot slaps and was restrained by security operatives who prevented her from descending further on him.

Read what she shared on Instagram:

I went to Diamond bank (Nnewi) today and went to their customer service to lay a complaint but the crowd at the spot was much so I stood in one of the queues there, there was this guy (via pix) behind me I noticed he was somehow resting on me so I moved a little and he moved with me, I noticed something suspicious so I looked back I saw him crossed both of his hands covered with a paper down his waist....

I kept mute and was busy with my phone I noticed something behind me again I turned and saw him with his hands at the same position so all of a sudden I felt something hot dripped on my leg to my outmost surprise it was a sperm I turned gat hold of him and gave him some hot slaps I know he has never received in his life before.... if not for the securities that intervene like seriously he won't live to remember a day like this.

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has urged Nigerian youths to ‘quit whining’ and that no body owe them anything.

Fayemi made this known in a lecture titled ‘The Successor-Generation: Reflections on Values and Knowledge in Nation Building’ at the 2017 UNILAG Convocation Lecture in Lagos, Monday.

Fayemi: I am ready to defend my actions

Fayemi who went on memory line told the graduating students of his Alma Mater that as a UNILAG graduate and a post-graduate student in the United Kingdom for him to survive he drove taxis and worked as a security guard, amongst several other menial jobs.

He said ‘the last lesson I want to talk about is the debilitating entitlement mentality that is commonplace among young people today. The earlier we realise that no one owes us anything, the better for us, and the more prepared we would be to face life’s challenges.
‘Don’t think you are entitled to a job, just because of your parents’ influence or what they have. Don’t think things would be all rosy because you graduated from UNILAG with good grades. Be prepared for surprises and disappointments because life is bound to hand you a couple. The only guarantees you have in this life is what you do for yourself with the grace God has bestowed on us all.’

We need to get off our high horses, quit whining and start doing — for ourselves and for our country. If something angers you so much, instead of whining, think hard about possible solutions and do something about it. Doers have a way of finding each other out, and before you know it, you are in good company with progressive minded people that exude positive energy — comrades with whom you can challenge the status quo, fight together, and succeed together. Some of the closest friendships I have kept to this day are from my UNILAG days — people I can actually trust to surmount challenges and get things done.

So also, complainers have a way of finding each other out, to indulge in very depressing rhetoric about why things can’t work and who is at fault. From their comfort zones they criticise without offering any solutions and always end up frustrated — run away from such people.”

Introduction

It is with great pride that I participate in the 2017 Convocation ceremony of my alma mater – the University of Lagos – UNILAG. It is always fascinating to return to these scenic and historic grounds of learning, situated in one of the most dynamic cities in the world. I am most grateful to the authorities for honouring me with this hallowed platform to share a few thoughts with this set of graduating students in particular and the university community at large as this year’s convocation lecturer.
When the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Rahamon A. Bello first notified me of my being selected to deliver the 2015/2016 convocation lecture, the first thought that came to my mind was “what would I say?” Convocation lectures traditionally have a defined structure. The university authorities usually invite an individual that has attained some measure of success in life, to share his/her story, with the hope that the graduating students can learn a thing or two about what to expect in the ‘real world’, as the larger society is often called.
So I assume I am expected to speak about my experiences in life, in the more than three decades since I graduated, with the hope that those whose turn it is today can have an idea of what to expect out there. I am also supposed to dispense some hope about the bright prospects that the future holds, and offer some useful advice that would guide them going forward. Considering these expectations of the traditional convocation speech, I must apologise in advance if peradventure I don’t live up fully to this billing. This is because my presentation today would dwell more on pointing you back to some of life’s key lessons that are available within a university, which are enough to prepare you for life after graduation.

Many years ago, I matriculated into this university, thrown into a whole new universe, not knowing what to expect. As a naïve and unassuming youth, all I came to UNILAG with was eagerness to learn and zeal to explore. At graduation, I was undoubtedly a different person. This institution provided the conditions for me to discover myself; find my voice; and hone my worldview and core values.

I must therefore start by expressing my gratitude to my lecturers in the Department of History in the Faculty of Arts, who all contributed in no small measure to the man that I am today. I was blessed to learn at the feet of some of the finest minds in the history of academia in Nigeria such as the late Prof. Ade Adefuye, Prof. T.G.O. Gbadamosi, Prof. Anthony Asiwaju, Prof. G.O. Ogunremi, Late Prof. B.A. Agiri, Late Dr. Nina Mba, Dr. Ram, Dr. Kehinde Faluyi, Dr. J.J. White, and Dr. Garvey.

UNILAG’s commitment to a multi-disciplinary university education made it mandatory for me to take courses in other departments like Political Science, English and Philosophy, towards fulfilling the requirements for the award of a degree. I was therefore also privileged to have been taught by other legends such as Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Prof. Alaba Ogunsanwo, Prof. Oye Oyediran, Prof. Remi Anifowose, Prof. Moyibi Amoda, and Prof. Derin Ologbenla in the Department of Political Science. In the Department of Philosophy, I was tutored by Dr. Sophie Oluwole, Dr. Ezekiel Ogundowole, Dr. C. S. Momoh and Dr. Omoregbe, while in the Department of English, some of my lecturers were Prof. Theo Vincent, Late Prof. Biodun Adetugbo, Prof. Ebun Clark, Dr. Funso Akere and the then freshly minted Dr. Karen King-Aribisala.
All these great teachers lit the candle of knowledge on my path, and laid in me the foundations of scholastic curiosity, intellectual acuity, and passionate commitment to a life of service – values that remain with me to this day. I have had cause to maintain a close relationship with a good number of them, and I would forever be grateful for their impact on me in those formative years in UNILAG.

Like me, many thousands of people from across the country and beyond have passed through this institution since it was established on Monday, October 22, 1962. A university can never be said to have accomplished her mission, as it is meant to exist in perpetuity to be, in the words of the President of Harvard University, “stewards of an unbroken and endless chain of inquiry”, (Faust, 2012). As I have argued before, as the summit of higher education, the university as a community of teachers and scholars, is the veritable instrument and institution of social transformation. The work of a university is never done. “The true value of a university represents the totality of our common humanity and the possibilities of our collective progress as a community.”

Thus, through each and every one of us associated with her, UNILAG continues to justify her perpetual existence. Her positive impact can be felt in every sphere of human endeavour across the world, and all Akokites – past and present – guided by our motto – “In Deed and In Truth” – continue to ensure UNILAG lives up to this idea and ideal of a university.
The Role of Educational Institutions in National Development
The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines ‘Alma Mater’ as “a school, college, or university which one has attended, or from which one has graduated”. The etymology of the word is from the Latin language, and literally means, ‘nourishing mother’. This explains our deep emotional connections to the institutions we have attended – just like the love a child has for his/her mother. Correspondingly, this gives us insight into the crucial role of educational institutions in grooming the next generation of leaders and citizens in every society – just as a mother raises her children. Therefore, in thinking of the university as a person, a possible definition of the soul of a university would be “nothing geographically or temporally fixed, but the mark left on the alumnus’ mind, which stays with them all their lives (Deboick, 2010).
Permit me Mr. Vice Chancellor sir, to point out to the graduating students, as some may know already, that the certificate they would receive in the course of the convocation proceedings, and which bears your signature, is being awarded to them for fulfilling the requirements in ‘Character and Learning’...

As far back as the independence epoch of our great country, our founding fathers held that intellectual emancipation was one of the pillars of sustainable national liberation. The patriarchs made the achievement of freedom from ignorance through universal education an urgent national priority during their time. As late Chief Obafemi Awolowo said, “In normal circumstances, the greatest guarantee of the liberty of the citizen is an educated and enlightened society.” The same holds true today. Functional Education is absolutely vital to our economic, social and political progress.

Retooling the University for National Development

Universities, like the people within them, must embrace change, re-imagine possibilities, and revitalize continuously (Faust, 2012). In contemplating the challenges of leadership and development in Nigeria therefore, we have to critically reappraise our educational institutions and make necessary interventions to ensure they not only have adequate funding, world class physical structures, and functional teaching equipment, but also the right social environment that supports the education of the total man. In the words of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, “Whether we are conscious of or acknowledge it or not, the fact remains stubborn and indestructible that poverty, disease, social unrest, and instability, and all kinds of international conflicts, have their origins in the minds of men … It is only when the minds of men have been properly and rigorously cultivated and garnished, that they can be safely entrusted with public affairs with a certainty and assuredness that they will make the best of their unique opportunity and assignment” (Awolowo, 1967).

As I said earlier, I would be highlighting certain life lessons that must be learnt in the university environment that promotes the inculcation of progressive values, and the development of sound character in young people. If we are to improve the quality of our country’s human capital and invariably have better national development outcomes, we have to pay attention to the factory that produces the most important segment of our work force that we expect to drive development in every sector, and which is the crop from which our future leaders would arise.

These crucial lessons are present in the ideal university setting, and some of you have done well to imbibe them. Some others have ignored them in pursuit of “more important matters”, and are thus deficient in some of them. The misplaced emphasis on certificates – that is to say the sole concentration on obtaining a certificate as the end result of your 4/5/6 years of study here, has stopped some of you from imbibing critical life skills that ought to have been learnt concurrently with your academic studies.

Year-in, year-out, thousands of young people graduate from our universities. Many of them end up swelling the ranks of unemployed or underemployed people, leading to a massive youth unemployment crisis that has calcified over the years, with grave socio-economic portents for the future. How are our universities addressing this and other strategic national priorities? Are we paying enough attention by ensuring our graduates are well equipped to respond to this and other challenges of our time? We also have the tragedy of academically sound graduates that have no fibre of ethical awareness, locus of control, or moral judgment in their beings. These ones are cannon fodder launched into the larger society to complicate already existing socio-economic malaises – disasters waiting to happen.

My thesis is that knowledge alone is not enough; neither is character by itself sufficient. A fit and proper UNILAG graduate is one that has successfully straddled the obligations of being found worthy in both ‘Character and Learning’. I would now be sharing with you from my own personal experiences, six key lessons and life skills that UNILAG taught me, which I would be commending to you.

Knowledge is Power – Learn How to Learn

The university offers the opportunity for serious minded young people to acquire knowledge. The centrality of academics to university life is such that, your ability to prove that you have learnt what you ought to, in accordance with the curriculum, is the singular criterion for progression from level to level till you graduate. However, some people mistake passing exams for acquiring knowledge – they are two different things.
As a student, you have to learn how to learn. That is, you have to learn the principles behind actually acquiring knowledge. When you receive information via lectures, books e.t.c., the first impulse should not be to commit it to memory for the purpose of ‘dumping’ on exam day, or to go on social media to display your familiarity with certain subjects. You should meditate on new information and study more deeply and widely, allowing it to truly illuminate your mind – that is what new information is supposed to do after it has been thoroughly processed.

Sometimes, new information dislodges dated ones in your mind, at other times; it reinforces what you already know, and gives you greater depth of perspective – one thing it never does is to leave you the same. As futurist and philosopher Alvin Toffler once wrote: “The illiterate of the 21st century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn, and relearn.”

So, you have to decide, do you want to merely pass exams or do you want to truly acquire knowledge and prove this by passing exams? This generation is one that is increasingly characterized by quick fixes in every area of life. We see it on social media every day, where oftentimes the most influential and most vocal, are those with the quickest fingers to type out bunkum
