A 25-year-old panel beater identified as Adejoh Ojonugwa has been arrested in Ondo State for stealing underwear belonging to his elder brother's wife.

He was apprehended by officers of Ondo State Police Command after the case was reported.  The suspect was nabbed alongside one Prophet Olajide Ogunleye of the Celestial Church of Christ, Ibanujemidopin Parish in Uso Local Council Area of the state.

During interrogation with reporters, Ojonugwa, a native of Kogi State, said he only visited the prophet for spiritual cleansing as he needed a solution to his problem. Narrating his side of the story, he said: "I went to seek spiritual cleansing from Prophet Ogunleye and when I got there, he prayed fervently for me. In fact, he asked me about the job I do, and I told him that I am a panel beater, which has been my trade for a very long time.

"Later, he asked me to open my hand, and he dropped something on it for me to swallow, which I did. After I swallowed it, he prayed for me and I left his place. But when I got home, I became unconscious.

Later, I began to look for my brother's wife underwear and I took them to the Prophet for some ritual purposes. Sadly, hours later, my brother's wife raised the alarm that her underwear garments were missing and I was arrested.

When the Police arrested me, I was taken to Uso Police Station before they transferred me here to Akure. Two of the items belong to my brother's wife and three belong to my younger sister.”

The Prophet, however, denied the allegation, stating that he was only being implicated by the suspect.

His words: "I am a true man of God and I have never seen the boy (Ojonugwa) in my life. He is just lying against me. The truth of this matter is that they came to me for a parcel of land and I refused to give them. I never asked him to bring any underwear for rituals. So, they feel it is an opportunity to implicate me in this crime since I had refused to give them the land to cultivate Indian hemp.

"Though, I engage in some spiritual cleansing for people, mostly pregnant women who have difficulties so they can give birth early and easily, I don't engage in rituals as it is against the belief of our church. I only see the allegation as pure lies against me.”

Visibly angry, the elder brother of the suspect, Benjamin Ojonugwa, said his younger brother had always wanted to have money “by all means, even through rituals. He is my own younger brother and has always been in haste to have money through any means, but I just thank God that he was exposed. He stole my wife’s underwear, and wanted to use it for ritual purpose, so that he will have more money than me,” he said.

Grace Ojonugwa, the victim, confirmed that the suspect stole her underwear from where she spread it to dry in the house. "It was my husband's younger brother that stole the pants. He was actually trailing me to spread it and when I discovered that the pants were missing, I knew he stole it," she said  Femi Joseph, spokesman of the Ondo State Police Command, said the suspect and the Prophet were arrested last week by the Police.

Joseph, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the cases of "stolen female underwear" were now becoming a trend and advised ladieas to be on their guard.  "We have to guard whatever we are putting on. I also advise parents to warn their children, particularly females, to be very careful where they keep their undergarments,” he said.  He added that the suspects would be charged to court soon

The House of Representative has approved N30,000 as the new minimum wage for workers in the country.

The lawmakers passed the bill during Tuesday’s plenary presided over by the Speaker of the House, Yakubu Dogara. They approved the figure after the bill was read and passed for the third time on the floor of the lower chamber of the National Assembly in Abuja.

Prior to the passage of the bill, the House adopted the report of the ad-hoc committee set up to look into the bill presented to the National Assembly by President Buhari. It said it decided to adopt the report of the tripartite committee because of the obvious difficult living conditions in the country.

The lawmakers inserted a clause in the bill which makes it effective from the date it is asserted to by the President. They, however, retained the original clause in the bill which excluded employers of less than 25 people from paying the new minimum wage.

In the face of the recent development, the bill would be sent to the Senate for concurrence.  Earlier, the lawmakers concluded debate on the 2019 Appropriation Bill, as well as read and passed it through the second reading.

They consequently referred the bill to the House Appropriations Committee and other related sub-committees for further actions. The House then adjourned plenary till February 19, after the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

Two days after an increase in Minimum wage was announced, the Federal government has announced plans to also increase Value Added Tax.

Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed, announced this at the launch of the Strategic Revenue Growth Initiative in Abuja. According to the Minister, some of the items that will be having an increase in VAT include carbonated drinks as well as some luxury items.

“There will be a VAT increase. During the course of 2019, we will have clarity as to which items and what the rate will be and we will have to take a request to the National Assembly for amendment before it takes effect. There is also going to be luxury tax. Already, there is luxury tax imposed on things like jets, yachts and few exceptional items that are classified as luxury and the Chairman FIRS will speak to that but we are contemplating increasing excise duties on carbonated drinks just like we have excise duties now on Tobacco and alcohol.

“But this is going to be a subject of study because we have to identify which ones will be affected and the best way in which to apply the taxes” she said

French Ligue 1 club AS Monaco are reportedly set to sack manager Thierry Henry just after three months in charge.

The Arsenal legend is expected to lose his job in the Principality, following a wretched start to his managerial career.

Henry will be told in the next 48 hours that he is surplus to requirements with former boss Leonardo Jardim in line for a shock return.

Jardim was axed in October to make way for the former Gunners’ striker, but now it appears the club's owners are about to make an abrupt U-turn.

MySportDab report Monaco currently sit one point off the bottom of Ligue 1 and their season has lurched from one problem to the next.

A bill seeking to increase the country’s minimum wage from N18,000 to N27,000 passed first and second reading at the senate on Thursday.

This was sequel to a letter which President Muhammadu Buhari sent to the lawmakers for their consideration.

The letter was read by Ike Ekweremadu, deputy senate president, on the floor of the upper legislative chamber.

“The purpose of the letter is to forward to the lawmakers, for legislative action, a new minimum wage bill to further amend the national minimum wage amendment act 2011 in order to give a new national minimum wage of N27,000 per month to the lowest paid Nigerian worker from the current N18,000 per month,” the letter read.

“This new bill and the amendments contained therein, were arrived at after consultations by the tripartite committee on national minimum wage which was constituted by me in November 2017 to consider, make recommendations and advice the government on this issue.

“The tripartite committee comprise representatives of the federal government, governors’ forum, organised private sector and organised federations of trade unions in Nigeria. The federal executive council (FEC), National Executive Council, National Council of state have all noted and approved this recommended amendment.”

After the letter was read, Ahmed Lawan, deputy senate president, moved that order 79 of the rules be suspended so that the bill could be passed the first and second time.

But Biodun Olujimi, minority leader, said the bill should not be “another election gimmick.”

“We will work hard, but it is important that this does not become another election gimmick. Let the people who should get paid, actually get paid,” Olujimi said.

On his part, Shehu Sani, senator representing Kaduna central, urged his colleagues to “see to the realisation of this bill.”

“Though this may not be enough, productivity is sure to increase,” Sani said.

The bill passed second reading after Ekweremadu put it to a voice vote.

The council of state had approved N27,000 at its last meeting on Tuesday.

Below is a statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Kola Ologbodiyan, made available to PoliticsNGR calling on the ICPC to investigate Information Minister, Lai Mohammed for an alleged N2.5 Billion Fraud;

"The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) charges the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to go beyond the Director General of the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), Is’haq Kawu Modibbo and institute a system-wide investigation into the N2.5 billion NBC scandal.

The PDP particularly demands an open investigation into the alleged roles possibly played by certain top officials of the Buhari Presidency, including the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, around the matter.

The party says ICPC’s uncovering of fraud in the N2.5billion NBC Digital Switch Over (DSO) contract has further exposed the inherent corruption in the Buhari Presidency and how Presidency officials and leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been siphoning billions of naira from government agencies.

This further exposes how corruption has become endemic at the NBC under the direct supervision of the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who has not yet cleared his name on the N13.1 million NBC loan scandal since May 2016.
The party therefore urges the ICPC to go beyond the N2.5 billon NBC fraud and investigate the allegations that Alhaji Lai Mohammed abused the privilege of his office by approving a letter from his office requesting the NBC, an agency under his supervision, to advance a loan of N13.1 million to his ministry for a purported official assignment in China.

The demand, which was against budgetary approvals, principle of TSA and the anti-corruption claims of the government he represents, has not been investigated and culprits prosecuted, even when it was clear that it corrupted the agency in converting it into a lending institution, against our financial regulations and the laws that established the NBC.

The PDP insists that the failure by the Buhari Presidency to investigate and if found answerable prosecute Alhaji Lai Mohammed for this alleged act of manifest corruption shows how the Buhari Presidency has been concealing humongous corruption and sharp practices being perpetrated by APC leaders and cronies of Mr. President in the ministries, departments and agencies.
Alhaji Lai Mohammed is a spokesperson of the Buhari administration, which claims to be committed to the fight against corruption. He cannot, in all honesty, hold such a position with this allegation still hanging around his neck.

This is more so as allegations are rife in the public space that agencies in the Ministry of Information and Culture now reek of corrupt and sharp practices in the last three years.

A bill for an Act to amend the Electric Power Reform Act to prohibit and criminalise estimated billing by any of the Electricity Distribution companies in Nigeria, passed the third reading in the House of Representatives yesterday January 22nd.

The bill, which is being sponsored by the Leader of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila had scaled public hearing on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. The lawmaker argues that there is no civilised Nation in the world that bills their electricity consumers arbitraily the way electricity companies in Nigeria do.

“Any regulation that allows estimation of bills when the actual consumption can be ascertained is against natural justice and equity and should not stand'’ Gbajabiamila said

He said the bill, when passed, would put an end to the estimated billing by the DisCos, stressing that it would bring about a win-win situation for both the consumers and the companies.

“The bill will ensure that prepaid meters are installed in all houses, so long as the customers apply for the meters,” he said.

The House unanimously voted in favour of the bill when it was put to voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Yussuf Lasun (APC-Osun), at the plenary on Today.

A WhatsApp voice note which Premier League footballer Emiliano Sala sent to friends before his plane vanished has emerged. In it, the 28-year-old seemed scared for his life.
In a voice note sent from the light aircraft which disappeared on Monday night in the Piper Mailibu near Alderney in the Channel Islands, Sala told them to send someone to come find him if they don't hear from him. He sounded calm but exhausted.
He said in Spanish in the audio recording:

Hey guys, how is it going? Brother, I am really tired now. I was over in Nantes sorting things out, doing this, doing that.
I am now aboard a plan that seems like it is falling to pieces. I'm going to Cardiff now, crazy, and tomorrow we get going. I will train with my new team tomorrow.

The striker, who was recently signed to Cardiff for a whooping sum of £15 million, said in a separate voice note that came later:

How are you guys, all good?
If you do not have any more news from in an hour and a half, I don't know if they need to send someone to find me. I am getting scared!

The Argentine who used to play for Nantes completed a move to Cardiff City on Saturday.

Earlier it emerged he told his former Nantes teammate that he feared for his safety. He was making a round trip in the same plane and when he arrived in France, he reportedly told ex-teammate Nicolas Pallois, who drove him back to Nantes-Atlantiqe airport, that the trip out 'had been bumpy and he feared his safety for the journey back.'
His last Instagram post was a photo of him posing with his former teammates with the caption: 'The last goodbye'.

Sala and his pilot last made contact from their Piper FA-46 Malibu just off Alderney at 8.30pm on Monday. On Tuesday coastguard helicopters and lifeboats scoured 1,100 square miles of sea before halting the search at nightfall, Daily Mail reports.
In a statement Guernsey Police said:

During the course of the 15-hour search, which used multiple air and sea assets from the Channel Islands, UK and France, a number of floating objects have been seen in the water.
We have been unable to confirm whether any of these are from the missing aircraft.
We have found no signs of those on board. If they did land on the water, the chances of survival are at this stage, unfortunately, slim.

Speaking from Argentina, Sala's father Horacio said he was 'desperate' for news, and broke down in tears as he described him as a 'small town humble boy', adding: 'I just can't believe it.'
The footballer's mother, Mercedes Taffarel was emotional as she said her son was 'enjoying the best moment of his career so far.'
