The driver of the UBER and the Rapid Response Squad (Lagos State Police Command) should be commended for their quick intervention to prevent another suicide, barely 10 days after Daibo Toju Davies plunged himself into the lagoon.

The police in Lagos on Thursday rescued a 28-year-old man, Princewill David, who jumped into the lagoon at Third Mainland Bridge in a suicide attempt.

The incident occurred around midnight, less than two weeks after another young man jumped into the lagoon for yet -to -be ascertained reasons.

It was gathered that David, a resident of 42, Tajudeen Balogun Street, Igando, took the dive after his lover broke up with him.

The Foreign Exchange (FOREX) dealer was said to have requested a hailing taxi service only to tell the driver to stop midway through the bridge for him to urinate.

The Nation gathered that the driver turned down his request following recent trend of passengers on suicide mission, asking drivers to stop for them to pee only to jump into the water.

It was learnt that the driver increased his speed until he sighted operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) on pin down operation towards Adeniji before he slowed down.

As soon as the driver slowed down, David was said to have jumped off the car and into the lagoon where he landed on logs of wood.

It was gathered that the policemen quickly went after him, rescued and rushed him to the hospital.

David was said to have fractured his legs and sustained other body injuries as a result of the jump.

According to a source, the driver said David insisted he should pass Third Mainland Bridge after he picked him up at Igando.

“He asked the driver if they were on Third Mainland Bridge when they got there and he said yes.

“The man then said the driver should stop the car so he can pee but the driver refused and sped off.

“The driver said the man was forcing him to wait but because of reports of people jumping into the water after lying that they want to pee, he increased his speed and only slowed down when he saw RRS.

“But before the driver reached where the policemen where to complain, the man ran off the vehicle and jumped into the water.

“One of the policemen saw him approach the railings and pleaded with him not to jump but the guy went ahead. Fortunately, he landed on logs of wood and the policemen with the help of local fishermen rescued him.

“He broke his legs and sustained other injuries. He was rushed to the hospital where he is still being treated.

“They asked why he wanted to kill himself and he said it was because his girlfriend said she was no longer interested in him,” the source said.

Confirming the incident, police spokesman Bala Elkana said the victim was responding to treatment at the hospital, adding that he said heartbreak led him to attempt suicide.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibadan zonal office, has arraigned an ex-banker, Akinwole Dosunmu, alongside his wife, Motunrayo, before an Oyo State High Court sitting in Ibadan for the alleged theft of N2,740,300.92 from Sterling Bank Plc.

Akinwole, a staff member of the bank, and his wife, a customer and beneficiary in the bank’s third party acquirer scheme, were arraigned on Tuesday, February 18.

The bank’s third party scheme is a marketing strategy through which relatives and friends of the marketing agents are awarded commission for bringing new customers to open and operate new accounts with the bank.

According to the bank, Akinwole, a marketer, was appointed to coordinate the third party scheme.

The bank said, “Apart from the commission on account opening, the referral also enjoys a certain percentage on the saving made through the accounts every month.”

However, while reviewing activities under the scheme in 2016, the bank allegedly discovered that some of the accounts appropriated to Motunrayo as a third-party acquirer, were fraudulently tagged to her by her husband.

Investigation revealed that the accounts were not sourced by the couple, but by other third-party agents.

According to the petition filed by the bank, the couple dubiously benefited N2, 740,300.9292 as commission paid to Motunrayo through the scheme.

The couple were arraigned on 16 counts bordering on stealing, contrary to Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code Laws Cap. 38, Laws of Oyo State, 2000.

Count one of the charge read, “That you, Akinwole Dosunmu and Motunrayo Dosunmu, between July 2015 and April 2016 in Ibadan, within the jurisdiction of this court, did commit an illegal act, to wit, stealing of the aggregate sum of N1,280,554.38 property of Sterling Bank Plc under the guise that the account of one Odediran Oluwafemi and An Nee (a corporate account) were generated by Motunrayo Olanike Dosunmu, thereby, committing an offence.”

The defendants, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges preferred against them.

Counsel for the EFCC, Ifeanyi Agwu, applied for a date for trial.

Omasan, the sister of Toju Davies Daibo, a passenger who allegedly plunged into the Lagoon from the Third Mainland Bridge last Saturday, has said she does not believe the 21-year-old jumped into the water.

She said they both had great plans for the future, wondering why he would kill himself.

Toju, a resident of Sosanya Street, Soluyi, in the Gbagada area of Lagos, had ordered a cab from Gbagada.

On getting to the Third Mainland Bridge around 11am, he was said to have pretended that he had a stomach upset and begged the driver to stop so he could relieve himself.

In a jiffy, he reportedly climbed the pavement of the bridge and jumped into the water.

A combined team of state emergency management workers, Marine Police and local divers had yet to find the suicidal man, while the cab driver, Idowu Badmos, was taken to the Adekunle Police Station, along with his car.

Omasan, in an interview with Channels Television, urged government agencies to find her brother.

She said, “Toju on his normal self will never jump into the Lagoon because we spoke and he told me that he could not wait to go and serve in Abuja. I told him that I would come and see him there because I school at the University of Abuja.”

The mother, Kemi, said her son had no previous record of depression or drug abuse, adding that he recently graduated from the Lagos State University, where he studied Quantity Survey.

She said, “Toju is a wonderful boy, kind-hearted, who does not want to hurt anybody, he is easy-going and brilliant and above all, he loves everybody around him.

“He studied Quantity Survey at the Lagos State University and just graduated; the plan his father has for him was to further his study in Canada after his NYSC. He does not do drugs or touch substances or cracks.

“We have not heard anything from the police. His body has not been found and I want them to find him; everybody is just keeping quiet as if he does not have people. Toju is somebody; he has a family. They should find him, where is he? What happened to him? Where is Toju?”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Bala Elkana, said the command had commenced investigation into the matter.

He said, “Investigation is ongoing and we are trying to unravel the circumstances that led to the young man jumping into the Lagoon. There are some questions that need to be answered.”

A source at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency told our correspondent that the search for the victim’s body had not recommenced.

He said, “The body has not been found and the search has not recommenced; we are waiting for the Marine Police to help in the search.”

Culled from Punch

Fraudsters in Nigeria popularly called 419 guys have started to device new methods to defraud unsuspecting Nigerians. One of the ways is to send reset codes to phones and calling the owners of the lines to send them the reset code sent to them. DO NOT GIVE OUT THAT CODE TO ANYONE, I REPEAT, DO NOT GIVE OUT THE CODE. If you do, your bank account will be cleared and emptied. Just ignore the text message or delete it from your phone.

Men of the Lagos State Criminal Intelligence and Investigations Department (SCIID), Panti Street, Yaba have arrested 53-year-old owner of a drinking bar, Obioma Dennis, for allegedly stabbing one of his customers to death.

Dennis who is waiting for his arraignment in court, told newsmen that he regrets his actions and believes he was under a spell cast on him by his enemies. Dennis said the deceased and two of his friends had come to his shop located in Alausa and were about to smoke banned substance, Indian Hemp, when he challenged them. The argument that ensued degenerated into a fight that led to him stabbing the deceased.

“In rage, I grabbed hold of the chair they were sitting on, which is mine and threw it inside my shop. While I was inside my shop, one of the guys who I later identified as Emeka started destroying my electronic appliances.

He smashed my television. To save what was left of my belongings, I pushed him out of my shop. The next thing I saw was that Ifeayi grabbed a bottle of beer and smashed it on my head. I ran into the inner part of the shop where we prepare food. I grabbed one of the kitchen knives and stabbed Ifeanyi on his chest. He fell down in a pool of blood holding his chest.

“I regret my action now because Ifeanyi is like my younger brother. I contributed cash when his father died three years ago. If I was not gripped by anger, I don’t think I would see myself killing anyone” he said

The police said the suspect was arrested and detained at Alausa Police Station but that the case was later transferred to SCIID, Panti for elaborate investigation.

“It is a clear case of culpable homicide. The case would be charged to court at the end of investigation’, the police said.

Neighbors of 22-year-old man, Daibo Toju Davies, who jumped from the Third mainland bridge into the Lagos Lagoon on Saturday February 15th, have spoken about his life before his unfortunate demise.

Recall that the deceased boarded a cab last Saturday from a hospital to his residence, on Number 17 Sosanya street in Soluyi area of Gbagada. Shortly after the cab driver ascended the thrid mainland bridge, he asked the car be stopped as he was having stomach upset. What happened next was quite shocking to the driver as late Toju opened the car, came down, crossed the rail on the bridge and jumped into the Lagoon.

The Cable visited his home in Gbagada where his neighbors described him as quiet person who rarely interacted with anyone and was mostly about church functions.

Mr David, one of the neighbors of the deceased, said Toju was a member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God.

“I saw Davies last week Sunday. You know this is a like a ‘mind-your-business’ kind of area. I know that he stayed with his aunt. We don’t really interact except for church things. He attended the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
I do see him because my own balcony faces theirs, so anytime I am standing there, I do see him with his aunt. He was very quiet. I will say that he didn’t come out like that other boys in the area.” he said

Another neighbor, Mustapha said he met with the deceased on a few occasions. He said the deceased was an ally of his co-worker who was transferred months ago.
He used to come out once in a while maybe when he wanted to get things. When I first learnt of his death, I didn’t know he was the one people were talking about. But when I saw his picture, I recognised him immediately,” he told TheCable.
He didn’t really relate with people around here, except one of our workers whom he got along with very well. However, that friend of his has been transferred out of here. While he was here, Davies visited frequently and they discussed about church programmes. They also go hang out very well unlike with rest of us.
I knew him basically on the street. He was such a quiet fellow. I never saw him discussing or arguing with anyone. He went about gently not like some who did as if they owned the street.” Mustapha said

The search for Toju's body which was suspended over the weekend, continues today February 18th.

It was reported yesterday of a young man who boarded a taxi from Gbagada.

He had complained of stomach trouble and asked to relieve himself only to jump into the lagoon.

A search has been carried out by officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA) who in turn had engaged local divers.

Chances of getting him alive is slim, as the search has been suspended for two days as a result of exhaustion and the opposing water-currents.

However, Idowu Badmos, driver of the cab, and his car has been taken to Adekunle Police Station, Yaba, Lagos.

The identity of the young man has been found to be Daibo Toju Davies, 22 years old and lives at 17 Sosanya Street, Gbagada, Lagos State.

A tragic incident occurred on February 15, as a 22-year-old man identified as Daibo Toju Davies plunged into the lagoon from the Third Mainland bridge in Lagos state.

Davies said to be a resident of 17 Sosanya street in Soluyi area of Gbagada, engaged the services of a taxi from a hospital before the sad incident.

It was gathered that he stopped halfway through the journey and pretended that he was having a running stomach before jumping into the lagoon.

The public affairs officer of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Nosa Okunbor said they've intensified efforts to rescue Mr Davies.

Okunbor said;

“He should be in his mid-twenties. He ordered a car-hailing service from Gbagada to the Island. He deceived the cab driver that he had a running stomach after which he jumped into the lagoon.
“As I speak with you, the marine unit of the Lagos central zone has been searching for the victim since 11:30am, but we have not found the body.”

The means of identification found in the vehicles were two luggage containing his personal effects and a sworn affidavit with Lagos High Court.

A 12-year old boy has committed suicide in Agboala Ishiala Umudi autonomous community in Nkwerre council area of Imo State following the death of his parents.

The boy, identified as Kasarachi Odurukwe, was until his death last Wednesday, a primary six pupil of Practicing School, Umudi.

He committed suicide by hanging himself on a rope on an Indian bamboo tree.

According to village sources, the boy and two younger siblings had lost his parents and had been living with their mother’s sister in that village.

It was gathered that the deceased had been complaining of how boring the world had been to him.

One of the villagers said the boy would “jokingly tell his mates that he wants to die and meet his mother in heaven”.

It was gathered that on that Wednesday, Kasarachi had led his two siblings and two other kids to a nearby stream to fetch water.

On arrival to the stream, Kasarachi was said to have assisted the other children to fill their cans while he used a long stick to check the dept of the stream.

One of the sources told The Nation, “Having not been satisfied with the shallow dept of the water, the deceased was said to have taken a rope and tied it up to a bamboo tree. But his first and second attempts to kill himself failed while the other kids were begging him to stop.

“It was the third attempt that on a stronger Indian bamboo tree that the rope strangled him to death.

“That action jolted the other kids, who ran back to the village to report the incident to the family and villagers elders”.

Nigerian Army Arrests, Detains Officers Over Intercepted Weaponised Drones Discovered At Lagos Airport After SaharaReporters’ Story

SaharaReporters had on February 5, 2020 exclusively reported how the items were discovered in a carton at the cargo section of the local wing of the Lagos airport and military officers arrested a man named Kelechi for being in possession of the two highly weaponised drones.

The Military Intelligence has arrested and detained personnel on duty on January 28, 2020 when two weaponised drones were intercepted at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos.

SaharaReporters had on February 5, 2020 exclusively reported how the items were discovered in a carton at the cargo section of the local wing of the Lagos airport and military officers arrested a man named Kelechi for being in possession of the two highly weaponised drones.

Investigation revealed that the following day the man was asked to write a statement after which he was detained.

Upon interrogation at the National Air Defense Corps, Ikeja, the suspect claimed to be working for the Kaduna State Government.

Further investigation revealed that, Commander of NADC, Air commodore U.K Abdullah, later received a call from some unknown persons, who ordered him to release the man and drones.

Abdullah, it was gathered, later released the suspect and drones on January 30, 2020.

The commander, who only assumed duties in December 2019 at the NADC, was said to have instructed his officers to drop further investigation on the matter.

However, in the latest twist to the matter as discovered by SaharaReporters, out of the military personnel arrest over the incident, all those from the Northern part of the country have been released by the authorities, leaving only one ACM Chike Mba, an Easterner, in detention.

The soldiers were all held for three days during, which period they are interrogated over the incident before the others except Mba were released.

SaharaReporters gathered that authorities of the NADC are currently conducting an internal investigation to identify those responsible for leaking photos of the weaponised drone.

The officers could face a court martial and be sentenced to time in prison if found guilty of any offence by military authorities.

Recall that in May 2016, the Nigerian Government placed a ban on launching Remotely Piloted Aircraft or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) in its airspace without a permit from the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority as well as the Office of the National Security Adviser.

According to the rule, drones weighing more than 250 grams (.55 pounds) must be registered with the NCAA.

Though the Kaduna State Government has denied having anything to do with the intercepted drones, findings by SaharaReporters indicated that it is among states that had made moves to deploy drones to tackle bandits, kidnappers, and killer herdsmen within its territory in recent times.
