Singer and architect Adokiye Kyrian was recently made a Youth Ambassador in Imo State. The 'Back Up' crooner is also the project co-ordinator of 'The Youth Decides". Adokiye and her team flew government private jet during their visit to the Imo state government.

Fifteen-year-old Sani Musa on Thursday shocked onlookers during a parade by policemen attached to the Inspector General of Police Special Task Force on Anti-Pipeline Vandalism, when he confessed that he had travelled to Lagos from Jos for the sole purpose of engaging in pipeline vandalism.

Musa was arrested alongside three others -Chibuzor Okorie, Musa Adamu and Aminu Suleiman- with a truck as well as 200 kegs of 50 litres of diesel, which was allegedly siphoned from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation pipeline in the Sagamu area of Ogun State.

The teenage suspect told PUNCH Metro that it was his quest for a better life that got him into the business of pipeline vandalism.

He said due to the poverty in his family as well as the unrest in Jos, his father advised him to travel to Lagos where he would easily make money.

Sani said, "My family could barely feed and there was no money for my education. My father advised me when I was 14 that I was old enough to travel down to Lagos and make money for the family.

"He called one of my relatives, Alhaji Sherrif, who is a businessman in Lagos that he wanted him to show me the way and Alhaji told me about the business (pipeline vandalism).

"As soon as I arrived, Alhaji Sheriff said I should join him as a conductor in his business. He buys and sells diesel and other products to drivers and most of them are got from our suppliers at Sagamu.

"He told me the implication of the business and the danger in case of arrest. He was the one that advised me to say that I am a student and had just arrived Lagos few weeks ago in case the police accosted me. My duty is just to serve as a conductor attached to one of his drivers.

"I never joined them when they went into the bush; all I did, was to stand by the roadside, watch out for security personnel and alert them. Our duty is strictly to carry the product and deliver it to Mile 12, where we have tanks. He pays me N2,000 per trip which is a lot of money.

"I am terribly sorry; it's just that I promised to change the fortunes of my family. I am sorry, please forgive me and give me another chance to return back to school. I am still in primary four."

Another suspect, Okorie, who claimed to be 44, told PUNCH Metro that he had contacts that monitored NNPC and alerted him whenever fuel was being pumped into the pipelines.

He said he usually sold adulterated diesel to suppliers at the cost of N4, 500 for 50 litres.

"At the end of the day it will be sold at N6,000 to retailers who are always on a standby because of the price at which it is sold. On a part time basis, we also work with a group of vandals who assists us in collecting fuel from pipelines," he said.

Assistant Commissioner of Police, Friday Ibadin, who is in charge of the task force, said the suspects were arrested on October 17, 2013 around Sagamu through the cooperation of the community.

Globacom has slashed the tariff on BlackBerry plans by half in an unprecedented move aimed at liberalising access to the modern tool for social and business networking.

Announcing the new tariff in Lagos on Wednesday, the company in a press statement, said that in addition to the drastic tariff drop, there is also considerable increase in the data allowance for both BlackBerry 10 plans and the generic BlackBerry plans.

The statement signed by Adeniyi Olukoya, Globacom's Coordinator, Marketing, disclosed that the Absolute Month platform which hitherto was N2,800 with 3GB data, now goes for N1, 000 with 3GB data.

The Absolute Week plan goes for N500 with 700MB and the COMONTH and COWEEK plans go for N899 and N400 with data allowance of 3GB and 700MB respectively.

"Globacom is the first network to introduce Blackberry service in Nigeria and we have continued to maintain the lead by offering subscribers the best and most pocket friendly BlackBerry rates. Glo always has exciting offers for both existing and potential customers. We are offering these new tariffs to encourage Nigerians to use data more frequently. This will make life more abundant for our subscribers," the statement added.

According to the company, the new BlackBerry subscription tariffs are for both old and new customers.

"Nigerians will recall that Globacom's entrance into the nation's telecommunications brought about dynamic changes. We have a commitment to continue to delight Nigerians and make telephone services not only available but also affordable. The drastic reduction in the subscription tariffs for all BlackBerry plans is one of such. The corpses of more than 80 migrants, most of them women and children who died of thirst, have been found in northern Niger Republic after their vehicle broke down attempting to cross the Sahara Desert, military sources said on Thursday.

The migrants had set off in two trucks from Niger's northernmost mining town Arlit across the desert towards Tamanrasset in Algeria in mid-October but dispersed to find water after their vehicle broke down.

"We have discovered more than 80 bodies scattered in various locations less than 20 km (12 miles) from the border with Algeria," a senior military officer told Reuters by telephone.

Most were women and children. There was no immediate information on their nationalities
Another military officer said about 20 people from the group survived the ordeal. Five of those walked for kilometers (miles) across the burning desert back to Arlit to inform authorities.


The route across the Sahara is still used by many migrants from the region and from farther afield.
More than 32,000 migrants have arrived in southern Europe from Africa so far this year although it was not known if that was the intended destination for this group.

Hundreds of those who make it to the Mediterranean have drowned trying to cross in recent months.

Two separate incidents in southern Italy this month underscored the dangers involved when 366 Eritrean migrants drowned in one disaster and about 200 were missing after another boat sank just over a week later.

A 40-year old widow who simply identified herself as Mujidat was caught on Wednesday with a dead day old baby she hid inside a sack around her residence at 2, Reverend Alimi Street, NEPA Phase I, Ijagemo in Iba Local Council Development Area of Lagos State.

P.M.NEWS learnt that a member of the community, High Chief Babatunde Balogun caught the mother of seven when she was  trying to dispose the baby at about 5 p.m. on Wednesday.

When questioned on the content of the sack, she claimed she was coming from the market where she bought some household items.

However, on a closer look, Balogun discovered that the sack contained a dead day old baby the woman allegedly had just delivered.
He then called the attention of the other residents.

Neighbours told P.M.NEWS that after Mujidat's husband known as Baba Mushin died about three years ago, they have seen men visiting her residence, the house built by her late husband.

When asked if she planned to throw away the baby because of an alleged paternity mess, she denied, claiming  that a welder turned block maker near her residence was responsible for the pregnancy that resulted in the birth of the dead baby she was caught with.

She claimed she took delivery of the baby by herself because she found it easy and therefore did not go to any hospital or sought anybody's  help.

At about 9 p.m yesterday when P.M.NEWS visited the area, residents of the area were still milling around the residence of the woman.
Officials of the Community Development Association, CDA, in the area later accompanied the woman and her sack of baby to the Isheri-Oshun Police Division where the matter was reported.
At the time of this report, the woman was still being interrogated.
