"I Don't Run Any Sex Toys Shop"- Actress, Bisi Ibidapo-Obe

Contrary to reports, popular movie actress, Bisi Ibidapo-Obe, has said that she neither owns nor runs an adult store in which sex toys and related accessories are sold.

The actress, who was allegedly at the centre of a paternity feud with controversial former lawmaker, Dino Melaye, in 2012, decided to set the records straight in an interview with our correspondent on Tuesday.

She says, "I don't run any sex shop and do not know where that report is emanating from. However, I am about to open a lingerie shop for men, women and children. A section of the shop will stock sex toys for sale in the Magodo area of Lagos on Sunday. The decision was borne out of the desire to survive as an actress. We have to engage in different businesses because we can't keep depending on the returns from acting, which is nothing to write home about.  There are so many challenges in the industry at the moment and one can't just fold his or her arms idly."

Explaining why she chose to delve into such a controversial line of business, the actress – whose career spans 20 years – says, "The demand for sex toys is high, especially around Magodo. More so, women have started paying special attention to their bodies and this has prompted my decision to take this route. I need to earn a daily income and I intend to sell the toys wholesale and not to retailers.

The actress, whose role in the Yoruba language movie Bisi Omo Logba  launched her into stardom, also adds that she is not ashamed to admit the nature of her business.

She says, "The sex toys are not exposed in the open. So customers have no reason to be ashamed or afraid to make purchases. The toys are kept in a remote section of my store. Their privacy is protected and many people are interested in these toys want to remain unnamed which I respect a lot."

The light-skinned actress, who also owns a hairdressing salon and food store in Ketu, Lagos, intends to shoot a new love movie in August. The new movie is coming eight years after the last one was released into the market. On the reason behind the hiatus in movie making, the actress says, "Producing a good movie is capital intensive and I spend over N15m on any film I produce. I go for big projects. That's why it takes like three years for me to produce another one. I love to write love stories and the movie is a true life story inspired by the experiences of a close friend. I had to slow down on movie production because I believe in producing a thorough movie."

Explaining why she likes to produce love related movies, she says, "I don't fancy comedy films because whenever I want to shoot movies, I love to write serious scripts that will hold the audience spell bound, maybe it is because I don't have such a comedy script now.

"I don't agree that Yoruba actors are the least paid. It depends on how you present and package yourself. If I offer you something low and you accept it, it's no big deal.

"I am told that some of my colleagues receive N50,000 for a movie,  but I don't charge up to N1m. Our industry is a lot more popular than before. We have good story lines, the western world appreciate our works because our actors are natural."
