Shitta Violence: Commissioner Urges Parents To Train Youths

Following recent gang-related violence that left about six youths dead and others injured in Shitta, Akerele area of Lagos State, the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Oyinlomo Danmole, has urged parents not to neglect their roles in providing their children with good upbringing.

Danmole, who was represented by Mr. Ogunlaja Adeshina, said this during the award ceremony of Idi Aba Youth Forum in Lagos on Saturday.

The ceremony is aimed at commending the role models in the community.

He said, "Parents should hide their children from all sorts of vices such as cultism and hooliganism because life starts from the family and with a good background, children will not go astray when they grow up.

"Surulere is known to be a peaceful environment and the government will not relent until everything goes back to normal. The government will be glad to see more of developmental projects organised by youths such as this programme and the commissioner will always be available to assist."

Danmole urged the youths to remain focused and get  good education as this was the surest way to self sufficiency.

The youths however urged government to tackle unemployment.

Mr. Adetunji Makanjuola, who spoke on behalf of the youths, decried the spate of violence in Shitta and its environs, adding that it was dangerous for youths to be unemployed.

He therefore urged the state government to partner with the local government for efficiency.

He said, "The rate of youth unemployment as it relates to our immediate community is very high. We need to call the attention of the government to it. All we need from the government now is not money, rather we want them to set up an employment bureau.

"This is one thing that seems to be lacking and I think the local government can help in this regard. This bureau would help in creating jobs for youths."

PUNCH Metro had reported that at least five people in the area, Mufutau Akewusola, Malik Akewusola, Kolapo Olatunji, Rahimot Balogun and Olamide George, were shot and killed by cult members between April and May.

Those given awards were the Surulere leader of the Action Congress of Nigeria, Abayomi Thompson, Chairperson, Abebe Community Development Association, Alhaja Smith Kiladejo; and Alhaji Nurudeen Anibaba.
