The Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Prof. Comfort Ekpo, has escaped an assassination attempt.
The University's Registrar and Secretary to Council, Mrs. Edak Umondak, said this in a press statement in Uyo on Thursday.
She explained that on Wednesday, May 7, 2014 around 11:30pm, some gunmen whose number could not be ascertained, stormed the residence of the university's VC at Ewet Housing Estate, Uyo and fired bullets into the building with a clear intention to cause harm.
The statement read, "The gunmen, who were spotted by the fence had a gun duel with the policemen on duty and later zoomed off in their parked vehicle. The University of Uyo is very grateful to God that no life was lost.
"It would be recalled that on June 12, 2013, certain disgruntled elements unleashed senseless mayhem on the Town Campus of the university, during which many university property went up in flames."
According to the statement, the University of Uyo management had alerted security operatives on the ugly incident for necessary action to forestall future occurrence.
"It has also become very necessary to alert members of the public about the escalating violence against our amiable VC who is passionate about the entrenchment of quality education in the university.
"All God-fearing people should condemn this act and urge any aggrieved person(s) to adopt legitimate approaches to resolving issues," the statement said.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Akwa Ibom State Command, Mr. Etim Dickson, said he was yet to receive report about the attack on the VC's lodge.
"I have not received the report on attack on VC's lodge yet. I will get back to you as soon as the report gets to me," he said.
