The Ogun State Police Command says it has arrested three suspected ring leaders of a secret cult group ─ Black Axe – in Ijako, Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area.
The command's spokesman, Muyiwa Adejobi, said detectives attached to the Sango/Ota Police Division, led by the Divisional Police Officer, CSP Muyideen Adisa, swooped on an uncompleted building, where the cultists were allegedly hatching a plot to unleash terror on the residents of the area.
Adejobi, who gave the names of the suspects as Bamidele Adejare, Sodiq Gbadamosi and Olamilekan Omoola, added that some weapons, including locally- made guns, cutlasses and charms were recovered from them.
He said, "The suspected cultists have confessed to many crimes, including participating in cult clashes that led to the death of many people in the Ota area."
The spokesman added that on Sunday, policemen arrested a man, Taiwo Wasiu, and a lady, Gbemisola Adebiyi, at Ijoko, Ota.
He said, "On Sunday, detectives who were on routine patrol along the Alasia area in Ijoko, Ota, intercepted two men and a lady carrying a bag.
"On sighting the police, the two men fled and the policemen chased them.
"One Taiwo Wasiu and a lady, Gbemisola Adebiyi, were arrested.
"When the policemen conducted a search on them, a locally-made double-barrelled cut-to-size gun and some live cartridges were recovered from them.
"They have confessed to being behind many crimes in the area."
Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police, Val Ntomchukwu, had directed that the two cases be transferred to the Department of Criminal Investigation and Intelligence, Eleweran, Abeokuta for investigation.
