The Rector of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron in Akwa Ibom state, Joshua Okpo, who is facing a N18 billion fraud allegation, was found dead in his Abuja residence yesterday Dec. 8th. According to reports, Okpo had traveled to Abuja to appear before the senate committee on Transportation when he slumped and died in his home. His colleagues who traveled to Abuja with him had arrived the National Assembly and was waiting for his arrival. When he did not show up and was not taking any of their calls, they decided to visit his home where they found him dead.
Last week, Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi had ordered an investigation into the misappropriation of N18 billion meant for the academy since Okpo assumed office as the rector of the academy from 2009 to 2015.
His body has since been deposited at the National Hospital Abuja morgue.
