The Uyo Zonal Office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has arrested a suspected criminal syndicate of bankers that allegedly specialize in forging signatures of deceased bank customers, and stealing from their accounts. 

According to the EFCC, the suspects also execute fraudulent financial transactions, including unauthorised debits of depositors’ funds.

A statement from the antigraft agency said the members of the criminal syndicate, which include, Mbong Essien, Akwa Akwa, Precious John, Kenneth Udoetuk and Ubong Udom before Justice Archibong Archibong were on Monday, March 2nd 2020, arraigned before Justice Archibong Archibong of the Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, on a 23-count charge bordering on conspiracy, forgery, obtaining by false pretence and criminal conversion of depositors’ funds to the tune of N37,690,000 (Thirty-seven million, Six hundred and ninety thousand naira).

The management of Fidelity Bank Plc, Abak Road branch in Uyo and 72 of the bank customers had in a petition dated December 9, 2019, alerted the Commission of suspicious withdrawals from customers’ accounts, including that of a deceased customer.

Investigation by the EFCC revealed that Mbong used his position as the Head of Operations and Transaction Service and Delivery, to establish a criminal syndicate that specialized in perpetrating the fraudulent transactions and deductions.

Further investigations also showed that without the authorization or knowledge of the management of the bank, the defendants allegedly managed a fictitious fixed deposit account with interest accruing to it.

One of the charges reads: “Mbong Emmanuel Essien ‘M’, Ubong Godwin Udom ‘M’ and Akwa Ephraim Akwa ‘M’ being staff of Fidelity Bank Plc, Abak Road branch, sometime in June 2019 at Uyo within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court did steal the sum of N10,000,000.00 (Ten million naira) only, from the Fidelity Bank account of Arit Jeremiah Eshiet, which proceeds you fraudulently converted to your personal use and thereby committed an offence.”

The offence is contrary to Section 392 (1) and punishable under Section 399 of the Criminal Code CAP 38 Vol. II Laws of Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria 1999.

They pleaded “not guilty” to the charges.

In view of their pleas, counsel for the EFCC, Nwandu K. Ukoha, prayed the court for a trial date and for the defendants to be remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service.

The matter was thereafter adjourned to June 1st, 2nd, and 3rd 2020, for hearing, while the defendants were remanded in the custody of the Nigerian Correctional Service, pending the hearing of their bail applications.

An Ado Ekiti High Court has sentenced a middle-aged man, Isa Abdulkareem, to death by hanging for armed robbery.

Justice Mosunmola Abodunde, while delivering the judgment on Friday, held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts and consequently found the defendant guilty as charged.

During the trial, the prosecutor from the state Ministry of Justice, Mr Gbemiga Adaramola, told the court that Abdulkareem, armed with a gun and cutlass, robbed one Taiwo Olomola of N110, 000 and Techno phones.

Adaramola said Abdulkareem carried out the robbery on December 19, 2016, at Ureje area in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital.

He said, “Abdulkareem also robbed one Adeya Olalekan of N74, 000 and an Infinix Note 2 phone. The two-count charges of conspiracy and armed robbery contravened Section 402 (2) of the Criminal Code Law, Cap C 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012.” Abdulkareem had pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The convict was said to have been arrested at the point of the crime with weapons and other exhibits, which made it easy for the police to bring witnesses to testify against him.

The prosecutor called four witnesses to prove his case and tendered exhibits including the two guns, five live cartridges, phones, as well as a confessional statement of the convict.

The convict was represented by Mr Adeyinka Opaleke, who called only the convict as his witness during the trial.

A Nigerian Professor, Maduike Ezeibe has announced that he has discovered a possible cure for the dreaded coronavirus and lassa fever.



The Professor of Virology at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike (MOUAU) who once claimed to have discovered the therapy for the cure of HIV/AIDS, expressed confidence that the therapy which according to him, had already proved reliable in the "treatment of HIV/AIDS," would make coronavirus a thing of the past.



Ezeibe who gave the chemical equation of the therapy as (AI4(SiO4)3+3Mg2SiO4-2AI2Mg3(SiO4)3) and also disclosed that “it’s a mechanism for curing Covid -19 and Lassa fever”, urged countries affected by the deadly virus to adopt his therapy for clinical trials on patients.



He said;



“Electrostatic attraction would make electrically charged medicines mop pathogens which have opposite charges, is a known scientific fact and that viruses and abnormal (infected /tumor) cells are electrically charged is now known.

”Covid-19 virus and Lassa fever virus (DNA viruses) are negatively charged . Small sizes of viruses enable them infect cells, inaccessible to big molecules. So, existing antiviral medicines need immunity to complement their effects but some viruses cause immune deficiency.

"As a silicate, AMS also normalises immunity and as a stabilizing agent it enhances efficacy of antimicrobials to achieve effective treatment secondary infections.

“Effective treatment of secondary infections would cure any viral /abnormal cell diseases including Covid -19 and Lassa fever “



Recall that the Federal Government recently announced a N36m cash prize for any Nigerian that finds the cure for coronavirus and Lassa fever.

A pastor has been arrested and will be charged in connection with the disappearance of a man in Lagos state.

Police received a complaint on December 20, 2019, that one Olatunfe Anthony Oluwafemi, 29, a resident of No 27 Owode Street, Alapere in Ketu, was sent on an errand on December 12, 2019, and has not been seen since then. Efforts made by his family to trace him proved abortive so they turned to the police for help a week later.



Police began investigating Olatunfe's disappearance. His Itel phone was electronically analysed by Police forensic experts and that led to the arrest of the woman now using the phone, one Monsurat Gbadegeshin, 23.



In her statement, Monsurat said her fiancé Abiodun Abiola, 30, gave her the phone.



Abiodun was questioned and he said a man named Tolu Olurotimi, 20, sold the phone to him.



Tolu Rotimi said he bought the phone from one Pastor Ejiro Ologonla, 45.



Pastor Ologonla, a Celestial Church Pastor based in Lagos, was arrested and was also found to be in possession of the missing man's clothes. He narrated to the police how he met Olatunfe.



Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana said: " He said he was at Oniru beach for spiritual cleansing on that fateful day when he met the missing Olatunfe Anthony Oluwafemi.



"He stated that while he was at the beach, the missing person who appeared drunk, came in and started chasing people around.



"At a point, he saw him climbing a fisherman boat.



"Later he saw the missing person pulling his clothes, shoes, dropped his phones and jumped into the sea.



"He claimed that he informed the security men on guard duty at the beach and also called a Police officer as well as one princess Arike Oniru on phone to intimate them of the incident.



"That he finally picked up the victims clothes, shoes and phone and sold the phone to one Tolu Olurotimi for one thousand five hundred Naira only."



The police questioned everyone Pastor Ologonla mentioned and it was discovered that the pastor is the last person to have seen the missing man.



Bala Elkana said: "The Oniru beach security guards, the Fishermen, the Princess and other witnesses mentioned were invited for questioning.



"The Fisherman stated that on that fateful day, the missing person came to the beach behaving as if he was drunk. That as he paddled the canoe to the sea, he was alerted that the man was hanging on the canoe.



"He brought him back and promised to give him fish. But when he came back the following day he did not see the man again.



"The Princess confirmed that the Pastor called her to inform her that somebody jumped into the sea and she advised him to report the incident to the nearest Police Station.



"The security guards on duty at the beach denied receiving a report of somebody jumping into the sea.



"The clothes and shoes of the missing person were found in possession of the Pastor.



"It is established that the missing person was actually at Oniru beach before his disappearance.



"The Pastor was the last person that had contact with the missing person.



"It is not yet established whether the missing person is dead or still alive. But circumstantial evidence gathered so far, are strongly pointing towards the Pastor.



"The Pastor did not just sell the phone belonging to the missing person, he also converted the money he found in the trouser of the missing person to his own use.



"There is no record showing that the Pastor reported the incident to any Police Station."



DSP Elkana added that the Commissioner of Police Lagos State, CP Hakeem Odumosu psc has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Yaba for further investigation and diligent prosecution.

A corps member identified as Amaka Asikaogu has reportedly been found dead in an Abuja hotel, few days to the end of her service year.


The deceased checked into New England Hotel in Abuja on Saturday evening with a male friend who left shortly after they were served food and drinks they ordered.



According to reports, when asked about the lady he checked in with, Amaka's male friend insisted that she is fine and alone in the room. Amaka also affirmed that she was fine when called by the hotel workers.



Amaka's corpse was however found in the room when the hotel staff who were worried that she is yet to check out the following day, forced their way in.



A family friend who confirmed the incident, told The Sun that the parents of the deceased sent her money after she complained that the person she was staying with asked her to leave the house.



The family friend said;



“It was like she was waiting for the end of the weekend before she get the accommodation before the unfortunate incident happened.”
