A suspected female kidnapper accused of abducting eight children was on Friday morning along Emir Road, Ilorin, Kwara State capital, lynched by a mob.
The mob descended on the middle-aged woman, beat her, tore her clothes and striped her naked.
Officers of the state police command had to disperse the mob with teargas to prevent the suspect from being set ablaze.
The incident caused traffic gridlock along the road, as motorists passing through the area could not access the road while the incident lasted.
A team of policemen who came with two Toyota Hilux vans had a difficult time controlling the angry mob, most of who were with stones and different kinds of objects, intent on lynching the suspect, who was by then lying in the middle of the road.
The situation caused panic in the area as people scampered for safety, shop owners were seen packing their wares and locking up their shops.
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the state police command, Ajayi Okasanmi, confirmed the incident, but said the suspect died on the way to the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital (UITH), where she was being taken to for medical treatment.
He also said that seven people involved in the attack had been arrested.
