The Federal Government has unfolded plans to provide Nigerians who are above 18 years with cheap and affordable houses.
The government said about 10, 000 houses would be built in every state of the federation, while each beneficiary would pay N3m in instalments spread over 15 years.
The Chief Executive Officer, Federal Urban Poor Housing Scheme, Mr. James Ugah, made this
known in an interview with our correspondent in Jos, Plateau State on Friday, after the kick-off of
a mortgage/social housing scheme that will provide 10,000 houses in the state capital. Ugah said the houses would be allocated to the
middle and low income earners on owner-occupier basis.
He explained that the project was in line with the millennium development goal of providing
shelter for the poor and the vulnerable people.
Ugah said the need for the scheme, which would be replicated in 35 states in the country and the Federal Capital Territory, came when FCT authorities demolished many houses that distorted the Abuja Master Plan. He noted that
most of those affected were middle and low income earners.
He stated that the idea of FEDUP was to support "this group of Nigerians to own houses of their
own." Ugah added that the scheme had the support of the World Bank and the Federal Government.
He said, "We are providing affordable housing for the urban poor in Nigeria as a tool for poverty alleviation and job creation. We have also engaged the Federal Government for intervention for the urban poor, where everyone who is above 18 years would be provided with even accommodation. This is with a view to alleviating high cost of renting apartments in Nigeria."
Ugah said FEDUP had been able to access land free of charge from state governments and the FCT with Certificate of Occupancy.
"We have been able to get the support of the various state governments in giving us land free
of charge with Certificates of Occupancy. We have no reason to fail," he stated.
