The Federal Government has signed a memorandum of understanding with Lufthansa Airlines to train 30 Nigerian pilots on aviation Type Rating and Jet Rating.
The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta, Mr. Kingsley Kuku, said the pilots would be trained under the special scholarship programme of the Federal Government.
He said a total of 30, out of 53 delegates from the Niger Delta, who were deployed for training in South Africa on March 20 and August 4, 2011, passed all requisite exams and tests and, hence, qualified for the training.
Kuku said, "These delegates have secured their Private Pilot Licence and Commercial Pilot Licence from the African Union of Aviation Academy, Mafikeng and Flight Training School, Midrand, South Africa.
"They will be going to Lufthansa Flight Training Institute, Germany for aviation Type Rating or Jet Rating. The contract for the yielding of these pilots to Lufthansa for further training is what is being signed between the Nigerian government and senior officials of the international airline."
To earn the two licences, Kuku said the pilots successfully passed a good number of ground courses and flight operation techniques.
He gave an outline of the courses as meteorology, navigation, air law, flight planning, instruments, radio aids, aircraft technology and human performance.
He stated that 176 delegates had been deployed in four countries across Africa, the Middle East and Europe for training in the aviation industry such as pilot training and aviation maintenance engineering.
Kuku observed that the Federal Government was focused on developing the skills of Nigerian youths in aviation, stressing that the sector had been identified as an important arm of the Nigerian economy.
