"Same Sex Marriage Law Irrevocable" – Senate President David Mark

The Senate President, David Mark, has said that in spite of criticisms and pressure from some sections of the international community "the same sex law is irrevocable."

Mark, on Wednesday appealed to religious leaders to, more than ever before, embrace prayer and fasting, which he said, "remained a potent weapon to resolve the various crises confronting Nigeria."

Mark, according to a statement issued in Abuja by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Paul Mumeh, stated this at a dinner he organised for priests who attended the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, held in Otukpo, Benue State.

He insisted that same sex marriage "is against our law and tradition and indeed, offensive to humanity."

The Senate President, the statement added, counseled the clerics "to use their weapons of prayer and fasting ; divine and human resources to actualise transformation both in our hearts and our society."

Mark specifically urged the clerics to continue to pray for the sustenance of the democratic process.

"The current challenges and expectations are high but we will do our best to live up to the challenges," he pledged.

He said "Everything, humanly possible, should be done within the ambit of the law, to nurture our democracy in order to yield the needed dividend for the citizenry."

He assured Nigerians that the government would not yield to the pressures of  'unpatriotic bodies' who are determined to destroy  the peace and unity of Nigeria.

Both the President of CBCN, Ignatius Kaigama and the Archbishop of Abuja Catholic Diocese, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, in their separate comments, stressed the need for peace and harmonious relationship between and among various religious groups in the country.

Onaiyekan noted that "all Nigerians should have the right to practise their faith without fear of intimidation or moletation."

He urged the government at all levels to do more to protect lives and property of citizens even pledged that the church will continue to pray for Nigeria and her people at all times.
