The former Manchester United manager's book signing is taking place at a Tesco supermarket not far from the club's famous stadium.
Some fans even queued overnight following United's Champions League victory over Real Sociedad.
Sir Alex, 71, stepped down as Reds boss after more than 26 years in May.
Fans travelled from as far away as the Far East and from across the UK to the My Autobiography signing.
Wearing a dark blue suit, Sir Alex arrived uttering a simple "hello" before settling into his seat to greet his fans.
Student Alex Norris, 20, from Portsmouth, was born two days after Manchester United secured their first Premier League title and named after Ferguson by his United-supporting father.
"I just had to come, although nervous to at the thought of meeting him," he said.
Linda Unsworth, 64, from Manchester, started queuing after watching her side win 1-0 in the Champions League.
"It has been cold and I managed to sleep a few hours but I wanted to say thank you to him," she said.
Ferguson managed United to 13 Premier League titles, two Champions League successes, one European Cup Winners' Cup triumph, five FA Cup wins and four League Cup victories.
On Wednesday, he rewarded one woman, who began queuing on Tuesday, by calling to see her at 18:30 BST with a signed copy of his book so she could go back home to Wales.
