A primary school teacher in Ondo State, Alade Adebayo, has been detained for allegedly flogging to death, a four-year-old pupil .
The deceased, Elizabeth Wanogha, was a student of a private primary school, Falaye Memorial Nursery and Primary School, located at Fanibi area in Akure, the Ondo state capital.
Adebayo was said to have accused the girl of being stubborn in class, and consequently beat her to a state of coma.
But little Elizabeth, who was rushed to a private hospital gave up the ghost after days of intensive care.
The grieving father, Mr Wanogha then lodged a complaint at the Fanibi Police Station. He alleged that his daughter must have died as a result of the pains and injuries sustained from the severe beating by her teacher.
Spokesman, Ondo State Police Command, Wole Ogodo, who confirmed the incident, however, urged the family and sympathizers, to wait for the autopsy report before concluding on the cause of the pupil's death.
Ogodo said that the suspect is being held by the state Criminal Investigative Department, SCID. He assured that findings of a probe into the death would be made public soon.
Meanwhile, Mr Wanogha, who resides at Adebowale Street, Fanibi in Akure, has insisted that the teacher be prosecuted for murder because he callously vented his anger on his late daughter.
He appealed to well-meaning Nigerians and activists to come to intervene and help the family before the matter is swept under the carpet.
None of the school officials offered to make any comment on the matter.
