National Human Rights Commission To Probe Iyayi’s Death

The Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, on Thursday said the commission would probe the death of a former President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Prof. Festus Iyayi.

Iyayi died on Tuesday in an accident involving the convoy of Governor of Kogi State, Captain Idris Wada (retd.).

Some other top shots of the union also sustained injuries during the crash.

Featuring on a Channels Television programme, Sunrise, monitored by our correspondent, the NHRC boss said issues surrounding Iyayi's death would form part of the deliberations of the commission's council in December.

Odinkalu said the commission would also attend to the issue of Mrs. Clara Chime, wife of Governor Sullivan Chime of Enugu State, who was allegedly confined to the state Government House as well as the recent killings in an uncompleted building in Apo, Abuja.

On Iyayi, the NHRC boss said from the reports available on the accident, there seemed to be human rights issues that should be of interest to the commission.

He said the report that a state vehicle in the convoy of the governor pushed the former ASUU boss away from the road was worthy of investigation.
