Operatives of The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency have recovered a substance that tested positive for methamphetamine from a graduate of Business Administration, Victor Ifeanacho.
The suspect, who hails from Enugu, was caught with the drug weighing 2.185 kilogrammes at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport,
Lagos, while checking the passengers on board an Ethiopian Airline en route to Malaysia.
PUNCH Metro gathered that Ifeanacho, who resides in the Badagry area of Lagos, was promised $3,500 by a syndicate if he successfully smuggled the drug to Malaysia.
Our correspondent also learnt that the smuggler had confessed to the crime, claiming that several years of unemployment forced him to
embark on the act.
He said, "I am a graduate of Business Administration. I have been jobless since I graduated in 2008. After several years of joblessness, I became a commercial bus driver in Lagos. I am single and live in Badagry.
"A man I met at a hotel promised to assist me in getting a job in Malaysia. I was happy to travel
out of the country. Out of frustration, I agreed to smuggle the drugs, which eventually led to my arrest. They promised to pay me $3,500, but I regret everything now because I feel empty inside."
While confirming the arrest, the Commander of the NDLEA's operatives attached to MMIA, Mr.
Hamza Umar, said, "We have arrested one Victor Ifeanacho.
"We found parcels of substances that tested positive for methamphetamine inside his bag.
The drug weighed 2.185kg. The case is still under investigation."
The Chairman of the agency, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, said he was disappointed that an educated
person, who knew the implications of drug trafficking, could fall victim.
"It is very disappointing for a university graduate who knows the implication of his action to get involved in drug trafficking.
"He was taking the drug to Malaysia where he would have been executed if caught with narcotics. I am happy with the arrest," Giade said.
