Pastor Kumuyi's Deeper Life Church In Fresh Crisis Over His Christmas Day Comment As Ilorin Members Shun Church

A fresh crisis is rocking The Deeper Life Christian Ministry established by Pastor W.F Kumuyi. This follows his recent sermon made on Saturday 21st December 2013 at the church's Annual National December Convention at the church's camp ground in Ogun state wherein he warned members of his church that Christmas celebration is idolatrous and unscriptural.

According to reports, the respected pastor was quoted, "We don't celebrate Christmas. It actually came from idolatrous background. That is why you don't hear us sing what they call Christmas carol, Never! We always say it is the December retreat. We are only gathering together because it is the holiday period and love the Lord more, and rededicate ourselves more.

When you find anybody coming in, or any leader, trying to introduce the idolatry of mystery Babylon, that they call Christmas and you want to bring all the Christmas carol saying that is the day that Jesus was born, and you don't find that in the Acts of the Apostles or in the early church, then you don't find that in the church either. If you don't know that before, now you know.

We are not trying to make the church turn like the world. We want it to be like Jesus Christ, and more like the Apostles. If you don't have that mind with us, then you have permission to go to other places."

The above statement generated a lot of controversies and reactions from Christian leaders and other revered men of God. Interestingly, reactions to his statements are not only coming from outside the church but members of the church have also reacted. According to sources, Certain members of the Deeper Life Bible Church in Ilorin, Kwara State have since started attending other churches and even took part in the Christmas celebration with other Christians.

A popular media personality and member of the church, who did not want his name mentioned, was spotted at the St. Barnabas Anglican Church Cathedral, Murtala Road, Ilorin, where he had gone to worship with members of his family as a way of protesting the position of his General Overseer.

Another member of the church also claimed he worshiped for the first time in 20 years at the Emmanuel Baptist Church, Sabo Oke in Ilorin, because of the pronouncement of the Deeper Life Church General Overseer, which he did not agree with.

His words; "I was born into Baptist Mission; I attended Baptist schools in my younger days and got my childhood Christian upbringing as a Baptist. I feel bad that a man of God that I so much revered could say such a thing about our Lord Jesus Christ even in the open. "If that position is not retracted, I may not say yet, what will be my decision as a member."

Several branches of Deeper Life Churches in Ilorin, the state capital, were closed while the traditional campground of the church at Eiyenkorin was deserted when it was visited.
