Two robbery suspects have drowned inside a canal in the Ojota area of Lagos while they were escaping with a mobile phone and N13,000, snatched from their victim.

Our correspondent gathered that the deceased were part of a five-man gang, which had unleashed terror on the Olusosun, Ojota, area, before attacking the male victim, whose name had yet to be given, at about 8pm around the Olusosun dump.

It was learnt that a local vigilance group, however, apprehended two members of the gang, and handed them over to the Alausa Police Division, while three of the robbers escaped.

Our correspondent learnt that on Saturday, two corpses, suspected to be the fleeing robbers, were, however, found trapped inside the Olusosun canal around the dump.

When our correspondent visited the area, a construction worker, who gave his name as Saliu Ahmed, said officers of the Neighbourhood Watch gave the robbers a chase before two of them slipped into the canal.

He said, “It was a about 8pm on Thursday. I knew when officers of
the Neighbourhood Watch at the Olusosun dump, gave the robbers a chase. They later got two of them and took them to the police at Alausa.

“The robbers had stolen one Nokia mobile phone and the sum of N13,000 from their victim around the dump. Three of the gang members escaped that evening. It was then surprising that on Saturday, at about 12pm, the alarm was raised that two bodies were trapped in the canal.

“When the officers came to examine them, it was discovered that the victims were two of the fleeing robbers who slipped and died in the canal. It was the police who later came to remove the corpses.”

Our correspondent learnt that the bodies had been deposited at a public morgue for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Joe Offor, had yet to reply to a text message sent to his phone on the incident.

The president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari says he will appoint himself as the Minister of Petroleum. The president dropped the hint in one of the interviews he granted a foreign media in his New York hotel.  

“I will serve as the Minister of Petroleum Resources myself,” Buhari told his interviewer.

The President was in New York to participate in the 70th United Nations General Assembly.

A 33- year- old woman Olawunmi Oyebode has been arrested and remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri for assault .

This happened one week to her wedding in Lagos State.

Her journey to prison started after she was arraigned before a Magistrates ’ Court sitting in Isolo for the alleged offence.

Oyebode who had concluded plan to contracther wedding allegedly slapped her neighbour, Anthony Onyeka for undisclosed reason .
The incident happened at 51, Ijikoyejo street , Ijeshatedo, Lagos where they reside .

After the alleged assault, Onyeka went to Ijeshatedo police division and reported Oyebode and she was arrested and taken to the station.

P. M. NEWS reports that every attempt by the police to settle the rift failed as Oyebode refused to apologise to Onyeka as advised .

Thereafter the police charged Oyebode to court with assault. When she was arraigned, she pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs Joy Ugbomoiko granted her bail in the sum of N20 ,000 with one surety. She was remanded in prison custody pending when her bail will be perfected .

While she was taken to prison custody, Oyebode remembered her wedding date and broke down in tears .

The matter was adjourned till 16 October , 2015.

 Liquid water runs down canyons and crater walls over the summer months onMars, according to researchers who say the discovery raises the chances of being home to some form of life.
The trickles leave long, dark stains on the Martian terrain that can reach hundreds of metres downhill in the warmer months, before they dry up in the autumn as surface temperatures drop.
Images taken from the Mars orbit show cliffs, and the steep walls of valleys and craters, streaked with summertime flows that in the most active spots combine to form intricate fan-like patterns. 
Scientists are unsure where the water comes from, but it may rise up from underground ice or salty aquifers, or condense out of the thin Martian atmosphere. 
“There is liquid water today on the surface of Mars,” Michael Meyer, the lead scientist on Nasa’s Mars exploration programme, told the Guardian. “Because of this, we suspect that it is at least possible to have a habitable environment today.”

The water flows could point Nasa and other space agencies towards the most promising sites to find life on Mars, and to landing spots for future human missions where water can be collected from a natural supply. 
“Mars is not the dry, arid planet that we thought of in the past,” said Nasa’s Jim Green. “Liquid water has been found on Mars.”

Some of the earliest missions to Mars revealed a planet with a watery past. Pictures beamed back to Earth in the 1970s showed a surface crossed by dried-up rivers and plains once submerged beneath vast ancient lakes. Earlier this year, Nasa unveiled evidence of an ocean that might have covered half of the planet’s northern hemisphere in the distant past.

But occasionally, Mars probes have found hints that the planet might still be wet. Nearly a decade ago, Nasa’s Mars Global Surveyor took pictures of what appeared to be water bursting through a gully wall and flowing around boulders and other rocky debris. In 2011, the high-resolution camera on Nasa’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter captured what looked like little streams flowing down crater walls from late spring to early autumn. Not wanting to assume too much, mission scientists named the flows “recurring slope lineae” or RSL.
Researchers have now turned to another instrument on board the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to analyse the chemistry of the mysterious RSL flows.Lujendra Ojha, of Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, and his colleagues used a spectrometer on the MRO to look at infrared light reflected off steep rocky walls when the dark streaks had just begun to appear, and when they had grown to full length at the end of the Martian summer. 

Writing in the journal Nature Geosciences, the team describes how it found infra-red signatures for hydrated salts when the dark flows were present, but none before they had grown. The hydrated salts – a mix of chlorates and perchlorates – are a smoking gun for the presence of water at all four sites inspected: the Hale, Palikir and Horowitz craters, and a large canyon called Coprates Chasma.
“These may be the best places to search for extant life near the surface of Mars,” said Alfred McEwen, a planetary geologist at the University of Arizona and senior author on the study. “While it would be very important to find evidence of ancient life, it would be difficult to understand the biology. Current life would be much more informative.”
The flows only appear when the surface of Mars rises above -23C. The water can run in such frigid conditions because the salts lower the freezing point of water, keeping it liquid far below 0C.
“The mystery has been, what is permitting this flow? Presumably water, but until now, there has been no spectral signature,” Meyer said. “From this, we conclude that the RSL are generated by water interacting with perchlorates, forming a brine that flows downhill.”

A 61 year old security man, identified only as John,  is presently on the run for raping two sisters for several weeks in the Anthony area of Lagos. He not only rapes the sisters Comfort and Precious (not real names), but gives them the sum of N200 to appease them each time he raped the girls.
He was also said to have warned the 11-year-old and 10-year-old victims that he would kill them if they revealed the secrets to their mother.
 
It was gathered that the rape, which reportedly went on for several weeks, was later discovered on August 30, when the girls started to complain about back pain and headache.

Punch reports that the girls then opened up to their mother, who reported the matter at the Anthony Police Division.
 
The mother of the girls, Rosemary Peter, who hails from Kafanchan, Kaduna State, and works as a food seller, said John usually asked the girls to bring food to his workplace in a take-away pack during which he took advantage of the girls.
 
She added that she was not aware of the incident, until when her daughters began to complain about back pain and headache. She noted that she also observed that her daughters’ private parts were slack.
She said, “I work as a food seller. John was one of my customers. He would say I should send a take-away pack to him at his workplace by afternoon. So, when the girls returned from school, I would send the two of them to take the food to him. I did not suspect that he was raping them.
“When they took the food to him, he would take them to a place and rape both of them. After satisfying himself, he would give them N200, and warn them not to say anything at home. He would threaten that he would harm them if they spoke up.
“Eventually, the two of them started to complain about headache and back pain. I was worried. On one occasion, I happened to be where the 11-year-old was taking her bath, and I observed that her private parts were slack as an adult’s. I was shocked, and I urged her to tell me what went wrong.
“That was when she opened up that it was John who had been sleeping with her and her sister. I rushed to the police station to make a report, but news had got to John that the girls had let out the matter, and he fled the area on the same day.
“But the police have assured us that he would be arrested. They told us to alert them anytime we set our eyes on him.”
A resident in the area, who gave his name as Fatai Gafar, said the police should intensify efforts in arresting the suspect, adding that the girls had yet to receive any medical attention.
He said,
“The whole estate is aware of the incident. It is very unfortunate. The security man does not live here with his family. He was the only person staying in the place he rented, and he has fled.”

The Ogun State Police Command, Monday, confirmed the arrest of a blogger, Emmanuel Ojo for accusing the wife of the state governor, Mrs Olufunsho Amosun of allegedly laundering $300,000 in London.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, who confirmed the arrest on the telephone, said Ojo is being detained at the command’s headquarters, Eleweran, Abeokuta, for questioning.
Vanguard gathered that Ojo was arrested for a story exposing the alleged quizzing of Ogun State first lady, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, in London for money laundering.
Ojo was said to have been trailed and arrested on Saturday and detained at Ibara Police Station, Abeokuta for wrongly accusing Mrs. Amosun.
She has since denied being involved in any money laundering saga.
Adejobi said the command received a complaint from the state government about the blogger, which led to his arrest.
Adejobi said investigations on the matter are ongoing.
He said, “We received a complaint from the state government on the suspect, and he was arrested. Presently he is with us at Eleweran, we are still conducting our investigations. If he is found wanting he will be charged to court accordingly.”
The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Taiwo Adeoluwa, said governor Amosun, was not connected with the arrest of the blogger as being speculated in some quarters.
He, however, confirmed that the state government made a formal complaint to the police and the director of the State Security Service, about a false allegation that the blogger made against the First lady.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief Olu Falae yesterday while receiving a former Chief of Defence Staff, General Alani Akinrinade, at his home yesterday narrated how the men who kidnapped him on his farm last week Monday dealt with him and how he almost lost his life in the process. It’s indeed a sad story for a man of 77. And more sadly, the elderly man confessed that a ransom was paid, and it was paid in full. His story;


“On Wednesday one of them came and said, ‘look we are going to leave here on Thursday morning. Since we cannot leave you here alone, if we don’t get what we want, we are going to kill you.

“And they said they gave me until 3pm, and if at 3pm they don’t get the money, they would execute me. I thank God that at 21 minutes to 3pm, one of them came and said, ‘the money don complete.’

“When the hoodlums came, they slashed me with their cutlasses; they said I was not cooperating. They dragged me barefooted into the bush. After dragging me around for about two hours, they stopped somewhere and asked me to phone my wife and tell her that I had been kidnapped and taken out of Ondo State and that was a lie.

“It was about 2.30pm on Monday that we started walking with very few stops until 2am the following morning. I suspect that I must have covered a minimum of 15 kilometres. That morning, I did not eat anything. So all day I had no food, no water and I walked close to 15km. How I survived, I cannot really remember. At some point one of them gave me rubber slippers. We walked until about 2am. At some point they called for an okada (motorcycle). At about 2.30am the okada man took me way down; I had no clue where we were going. Finally they dumped me somewhere, where I was until I was released on Thursday.

“In that place, we all slept on the floor on leaves. Unfortunately, the rain came in the night and I was thoroughly drenched. One of them brought a small umbrella to cover my head, but the rest of my body was not covered. They offered me bread, but I told them I could not eat it. I asked for a bottle of coke, which was what I drank everyday to have the requisite strength to survive and to continue on the march, because they were permanently moving. They were changing locations at two to three times a day. I suspect because they did not want the police to succeed in tracing them.

“The day they said I should go, one of them stitched my buba, which was in tatters. When I came out of the bush, I was able to find an okada rider, who took me to Owo. The place was about 10km from Owo town. The place was between Owo and Ifon. I walked most of the distance from my farm to that place. Miraculously I was not tired, I was not hungry and I was not afraid of them at all. Each time they said, ‘Baba we will kill you,’ I will tell them, ‘no, insha Allah, you will not kill me.’

“It was when I got back home that I became completely exhausted. But I am now 80 per cent fit and I know that in the next few days, I will be up again.

“Something urgent has to be done on the part of the government. This type of things should not be allowed to happen again. As for me, I am a very humble person, but by virtue of what God has made me and the status God has given me, it is an insult to our race that a man like me could be abducted by a bunch of hoodlums. By the way, one of them said, ‘Baba, if after you leave us you talk nonsense I will come and catch you again.’ That is the kind of insult I received.”

The elderly man also said he suspects Fulani herdsmen were the ones behind his kidnap because they have had series of clashes in the past.

He said, “The cattle rearers have been giving me a hard time for the past two or three years. Because I have a dam on the farm, they like to bring their cattle there to drink water. The cattles would then eat other people’s crops, There was a time they ate up my maize farm – two hectares. We took pictures and recorded it on video and we invited the police. They cattle rearers were asked to pay compensation; they begged and paid half of what we claimed and we accepted it.

“That was about two months ago. Whether it was one of them who went to bring his brothers to come and deal ‘with this wicked man,’ I don’t know. It is plausible. My view is that this is my home. I have not gone to farm in any other person’s territory. This is my home where I was born. I have every right to farm here and live in peace here. So, this is totally unacceptable.


“I once told the Commissioner of Police that if he could not protect us and protect my farm, I would protect myself. There will be self help if the government fails to protect its citizens. It would have been unfortunate if that were to happen.”

Police operatives attached to Pen Cinema police station in Agege, Lagos, on Sunday arrested a woman for trying to use twins belonging to Mrs. Ruth Uche for fraud.
The woman was nabbed at College Road Estate, after she took the four- month old babies to a retired police commissioner’s house, claiming they were his grandchildren.

According to the Nation, the suspect, a mother of two, identified as Victoria, was introduced to the Uches by one of their neighbours.

She was said to have deceived the children’s parents that she wanted them to appear in a film.
Although Ruth’s husband, Emeka Uche, was said to have declined initially, he eventually consented to her request on the condition that his wife must go along with the children.

But rather than taking them for the film shooting as claimed, she reportedly carried them to the big man’s house, who was overjoyed when he saw the children.

Trouble, however, started after the suspect could not state the actual sex and age of the babies.
Victoria, who had earlier taken pictures of the twins and sent to the man, had told him they were boys and two months old.

But when the retired commissioner eventually saw the babies, he realised they were a boy and girl, and looked much older than two months.
It was at that point that Mrs. Uche suspected something was amiss and told the man the babies’ actual age and sex.
“I did not understand what was going on. I do not even know the place we went to. She has been pleading with us that she wanted to use the twins (youngest set) in a film.
“My husband initially declined the proposal, but he later changed his mind since the woman said she wanted the children to act in a film. I begged my husband and he said he will only agree on the condition that I go with the woman.
“So, around 11:30am on Sunday, we all left the house and came to Agege. She took us to one big man’s house. I do not know the place and she told me to sit down that it is the kids that will act the film.But when I sat down, I heard the man asking her whether the children are two boys and how old they are.
“She said two months and that they are boys. But I told the man that they are a boy and girl, and that they are four months old.
“The man asked whose children and I told him they are my children, that the woman said she wanted to act film with them.
“That was when the man started shouting, saying that she told him that my children are his grandchildren. The man said she has sent their picture before, saying his son impregnated a woman before travelling abroad.The man now said that we were in it together and that I knew about it. I told him I do not know anything that the only thing she told us was that she wanted to act film with my babies.“Before she did not want to talk, but when people threatened her, she told them that I am innocent. The woman told them she wanted to get money from the man. That woman is a criminal,” Mrs. Uche said.

Senate President Dr. Bukola Saraki and some members of the Like Minds in the Senate have reached out to some emirs.

They are trying to explore ways of resolving the crisis of confidence between the Senate President and the Presidency, The Nation has learnt.

Some of them were said to be urging the emirs to prevail on the Federal Government to drop charges against Saraki, who is facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT) for alleged false declaration of assets.

But President Muhammadu Buhari may not accept under-the-table deal in matters relating to corruption, a source said.

The Senate President’s supporters have been attributing the arraignment to “political vendetta”.

Saraki had audience with some traditional rulers from the North on Saturday.

A highly-placed source said: “Some loyalists of Saraki are really pushing for political option. This is why they have been reaching out to prominent emirs and chiefs in the North.

“I think Saraki is buying into the rapprochement by meeting with some emirs where he explained his own side and how things could be straightened.

“For instance on Saturday, Saraki had audience with some emirs and chiefs from the North in connection with his travails and how to resolve the matter amicably.”

A member of The Like Minds said: “No one is happy the way things are – at a standstill. The Presidency and the Senate leadership are working at cross-purpose.

“If we continue like this, the hostility between the Presidency and the Senate will deepen and it will affect many things.

“We are reaching out to some emirs and Northern leaders to address this problem. We believe we can manage the situation before it gets out of hand.”
A source in the Presidency said: “As far as I know, President Muhammadu Buhari will not accept under-the-table deal on allegations having to do with corruption.

“The Presidency has explained that it has nothing to do with Saraki’s trial. There is no basis for any lobbying.”

As at last night, Saraki’s supporters were still divided on whether or not to confront the Presidency over his arraignment before the tribunal.

Some Senators are seeking outright condemnation of the trial; others are pushing for a subtle management of the situation.

“We are weighing options ahead of our resumption on tomorrow on how to manage the situation, “a senator said.

Reno who seems to be so much in love with Christ and can hardly do without calling his name in 2 or 3 tweets, few hours ago interviewed gospel music star, Lincoln Brewster and says the interview will air on October 24th.

Reno is now born again, and his twitter account with over 96,000 followers has been a major medium for him to talk about Christ. He was one of the people that campaigned vigorously against APC and had laughed several times on how APC can never take over power.

The Lagos State Police Command has arraigned one Hammed Mosuro, an employee of Access Bank Plc, for allegedly stealing the sum of N1.8m belonging to two customers of the bank.
The 29-year-old, who had been outsourced to Access Bank Plc by another firm, XL Management Ltd., was alleged to have collected the money from two costumers and failed to credit the customers’ accounts.
The suspect, who worked at the Apongbon branch of Access Bank, Lagos, was alleged to have made fake tellers to the customers without paying the money into their bank accounts.
It was learnt that the bank was made aware of the fraud when the two customers complained about non-receipt of the lodgments into their accounts.
It was gathered that when Hammed was questioned on the cash theft, he acknowledged the receipt of only N400,000.
The head of the investigation unit of the Accees Bank Plc, Mr Adeniyi Baneyi, reportedly invited the Bar Beach Police Division.
Mosuro was subsequently arrested and arraigned before an Igbosere’s Magistrate Court on six counts bordering on stealing and fraud.
The charges read in part, “That you, Hammed Mosuro, and others at large, between July 3 and July 6, 2015, in the Lagos Magistrate District did defraud Access Bank Plc, of the sum of N1,809,500.00, property of Access Bank Plc; and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 368(1)of the Criminal Law of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2011.”
The defendant pleaded not guilty.
The Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A.G. Omoyele, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.
The case was adjourned for mention till October 12, 2015.
