South African Rapper Khuli Chana Shot By Police In A Case Of Mistaken Identity

South African rapper Khuli Chana was reportedly mistaken for a criminal and shot while driving.

In a case of mistaken identity, reports say South African Hip-hop artiste Khuli Chana has been shot by the Police.


The multiple award-winning rapper was shot in Midrand, Greater Johannesburg in the early hours of Monday morning, October 28, 2013.

The news was confirmed by Chana's manager Refiloe Ramogase. According to Ramogase, police had identified Chana's car as 'matching the description of a vehicle belonging to a suspected criminal' SA publication, eNCA reports.

The official MTV Base Twitter handle also announced the news; 'Breaking News: SA rapper @KhuliChana has been shot and injured by cops in an alleged case of mistaken identity. More details soon!'


Ramogase also disclosed to eNews Sunrise that police in unmarked vehicles opened fire on Chana's car.

The rapper is reported to have sustained a bullet wound to his hand, with a shrapnel lodged in his back. Chana is said to have been the only person in the car at the time. He is currently in the hospital receiving treatment

A Police spokesman Neville Malila, told eNCA that a police operation was being conducted at a petrol station. Officers were waiting in a slip road to intercept a vehicle, when Khuli Chana's car drove past.

According to Malila, officers, though in an unmarked car, were in police uniform, in a well-lit area. Malila said that police fired two warning shots when Chana's car failed to stop.

He added that an attempted murder investigation had been launched, and the circumstances surrounding the incident would be investigated.

Ramogase, adds that even though Chana's vehicle was driving 'at 40 kilometres an hour' and that police had 'ample time' to stop the vehicle.

The rapper and his team will be pressing charges later on today.
