The Premier League have announced the introduction of vanishing spray from the start of the new season on August 16.
The foam, which proved popular at the World Cup, has already been adopted by the Champions League,
Europa League, La Liga, Serie A and Ligue 1 and is reportedly being considered by the Bundesliga.
The spray, which has been used in South American league for years, consists mainly of water and butane
and helps referees prevent players encroaching during free-kick routines before evaporating inside a
minute.
"At the Premier League we are open to developments that enhance the competition and it was clear from
watching the 2014 World Cup in Brazil that Vanishing Spray benefitted referees, players, and all of those who watched the matches," chief executive Richard
Scudamore said.
"Having witnessed that, and following consultation with our clubs and the PGMOL [Professional Game
Match Officials Limited], we have decided to introduce it in the Barclays Premier League and look
forward to having it in place for the 2014-15 season."
PGMOL general manager, Mike Riley, added: "As an assessor at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil I saw first-
hand the benefits of Vanishing Spray for referees, and for the game as a whole.
"The Select Group referees are looking forward to using it during Barclays Premier League matches
next season."
