Former Education Minister, Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu Is Dead

A former Minister of Education, Dr. Igwe Aja-Nwachukwu, has died in an Israeli hospital from an undisclosed ailment.

The deceased, who served as Minister under the administration of late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, was 63 years old.

The former minister’s younger brother, Festus Aja-Nwachukwu, who confirmed the death while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, said he died on Nov. 17th 2015.

He said the deceased was in the hospital for about 4 weeks receiving treatment, adding that his death certificate would reveal the exact cause of death.

Aja Nwachukwu who was also the immediate past Pro-Chancellor of the Ebonyi State University, had earlier this year declared his intention to contest for the Ebonyi governorship seat in 2015, a race he later withdrew from

Aja-Nwachuku, a native of Okposi in Ebonyi, was born in 1952 and appointed minister of education in 2007.


His father was Nigeria’s first minister of education.

He graduated from the University of Ibadan with a Bachelor’s Degree in Statistics.

He also had an MBA in Finance, MSc in Statistics and Ph.D in Economics.
