A member of the National Youth Service Corps serving in Kogi State has been arrested for allegedly breaking an Automated Teller Machine of a new generation bank with the intention to steal from it.
The suspect, Akah Tersoo, was arrested with an accomplice, Godwin Idih. The duo were among 36 suspects arrested in the last one week in the state.
Also, five persons believed to be members of Boko Haram were apprehended by the men of the command.
The Commissioner of Police, Wilson Inalegwu, spoke on Tuesday while presenting his scorecard since he took over the force leadership in the state.
He said Idih and Tersoo were caught on April 26, 2017, at about 2 .30am while breaking the ATM belonging to Ecobank with a digger and an axe.
He said, “My men, who were on a patrol duty, noticed suspicious movements at a branch of Ecobank on Ganaja Junction, Lokoja, and stopped to observe.
“On close examination, they saw two individuals who were later identified as Godwin Idih and Akah Tersoo, breaking the ATM with a digger and an axe. The team promptly intercepted and arrested the suspects with the exhibits.
“But sadly, one of the suspects is a serving corps member.”
He added that through the efforts of his men, the state was gradually getting rid of violent crimes.
Inalegwu stressed that the synergy between the police and residents of the state, who provide useful information, had resulted in a significant reduction of crimes and predatory activities since he assumed office in the state.
He explained that based on credible information from the public about some criminals robbing residents of the Nataco-Felele area of Lokoja, his men swung into action and arrested the suspects.
The police boss added that they confessed to a series of robbery organised by the gang
While commending his men for their gallantry, the commissioner said about 15 notorious armed robbers were arrested across the state in the week under review.
He said eight persons were also arrested for being the receivers of various brands of cars from robbers.
He added that items recovered from the hoodlums included Ak-47 rifles, live cartridges, a cheque of N8.4m submitted by one Abimaje Yakubu at a First Bank branch in Lokoja, belonging to his boss, Victor Edomwande, the manager of Fava Travels, Ikoyi, Lagos.
He assured members of the public of safety of their lives and property, saying the command would not rest on its oars until criminal activities were reduced to the barest minimum in the state.
