10 Lagos Residents Jailed For Unlawful Sewage Disposal

Ten residents of Lagos State have been sentenced to one week community service by an Ojo Chief Magistrates' Court, for unlawful sewage disposal, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

The convicts are Ijeoma Okeji, Chika Ibeh, Rita Nnabuike, Nneka Nnajianya, Stephen Onya, Emma Gbende, Sunny Nnoli, Nonso Godgift, Ikechukwu Ugboma and Peter Oforkamso.

They are occupants of No. 90 Igbede road, Ojo, and were convicted on a on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy to commit nuisance.

The prosecutor, Sanitarian Abulrasaq Akande had told the court that on Sept. 2, the accused were served a seven-day abatement notice to dislodge their ove-filled septic tank.

He said that instead of engaging the services of a dislodging vehicle to evacuate the sewage, the accused employed labourers, who disposed the sludge into a canal in the vicinity.

Akande said that the stench from the feaces became unbearable to other residents of the area, adding that such practice was hazardous to public health.

He further said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 2(a) and 6 of the Environmental Sanitation Law of Lagos State, 2000.

All the accused pleaded guilty to the charge.

The Magistrate, Mrs Adenike Shonubi, convicted them following their plea and sentenced them to one week community service with the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).

She, however, gave them an option to pay N7,500 fine each, and ordered that the nuisance be abated within 48 hours.
