The Subsidy Re-Investment Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) will disengage 110,000 youths it employed under its empowerment programme as from next month, Chairman of the Committee Dr. Christopher Kolade has said.
Speaking when he appeared before the Senate adhoc committee on SURE-P led by Senator Abdul Ningi yesterday in Abuja, Kolade said his committee would not be able to continue to pay the beneficiaries of the programme N10, 000 monthly as a result of paucity of funds.
Under the programme, 3000 youths were engaged from each of the 36 States of the Federation and the FCT but regretted that the committee had initially estimated the sum of N27 billion but the National Assembly only appropriated N9 billion which he said was grossly inadequate.
Kolade said that the committee received the sum of N180 billion last year and about N105 billion this year from the N15 billion monthly accrual to the committee and pays about N13 billion to the employees every month.
