Mission Failed: Nasarawa State Director Of The SSS Sacked

The Nasarawa State Director of the State Security Service, SSS, Mr. Halilu Musa, has been relieved of his position.

His removal is not unconnected to the gruesome murder of 10 SSS operatives and about 90 policemen by the Ombatse cult on May 9, 2013, in Alakyo Village, few minutes drive from the state capital, Lafia.

Sources say the leadership of the Service was furious that Musa allowed his men to embark on such operation without adequate surveillance and intelligence gathering.

He was also said to have released the operatives for the mission without seeking all necessary approval from the agency's top hierarchy.

The leader of the cult group, Baba Alakyo, had claimed in an interview that he didn't carry out the killings, but that the operatives were killed by his "god".

It would be recalled that the SSS on Sunday held a candlelight procession at its Headquarters, Abuja, in honour of the late officers.

During the session, Director-General of the agency, Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, who promised to forestall a re-occurrence of the unfortunate incident, stated that the Service had forgiven the cult group.

It was also gathered from a reliable source that henceforth, the SSS has resolved to provide adequate back-up for its operatives before they embark on high-risk missions.
