3 Chinese Bags Two-Year Jail Term For 'Illegally Storing Petrol At Home'

Three Chinese have been jailed for two years for illegally storing petroleum products at their Isheri, Lagos residence.

On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Lagos sentenced Guan Mang, Tony Yang (Yang Zhaoye) and Lu Yundi after they pleaded guilty to charges instituted against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Justice Rita Ofili-Ajumogobia ruled that the sentence would commence on Thursday when the judgment was delivered.

According to reports, the convicts, who had already spent two years in custody due to their inability to meet the bail conditions earlier granted them, will have to spend two more years in prison.

The Punch reports:

During the review of the case, an EFCC investigator, Mr. Ahmed Ghali, led by the commission's counsel, Ms. Bunmi Bosede, said the convicts stored the product in a 50m-deep pit.

They reportedly dug a trench through which the product was passed to the storage facility within their compound.

Ghali said, "One Adeyinka brought the accused persons on behalf of the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps having been arrested at Diamond Estate, Isheri Lagos. They were accused of dealing in petroleum products.

"After taking over the case, we commenced investigation by inviting the Chief Security Officer of the estate.

"We interviewed him. He informed us the convicts dug trench in their compound for storing petroleum products."
