Police, UNIBEN Set To Fight Cultism In Edo State

The Edo State Command of the Nigerian Police Force says it has put measures in place to stem the cult war between 'Eiye' Confraternity and 'Black Axe' Confraternity in Benin City which has claimed two lives.

The Edo State Police Commissioner, Foluso Adebanjo, told our correspondent that the Police is collaborating with the Management of the University of Benin to curb the menace in and around the campus.

Last week Friday a student of the University of Benin was shot in broad daylight in the midst of about a thousand students while trying to take part in the school biometric registration.

Though he survived the attack and is being treated in an undisclosed hospital on account of his safety, his attack brought to the fore what is now known to be a cult war between 'Eiye' Confraternity and the 'Black Axe' Confraternity in Benin City.

Such cult styled attack was witnessed at Osasogie environs, a student settlement beside the University of Benin and another at the very heart of the New Benin Market where another youth was killed.

This brazen broad daylight attack, which has heightened the security situation in the school and the fear it has created is further fueled by rumors of killings ranging between five as speculated by the students to 20 as reported by a national daily.

The Edo State Commissioner of Police who did not confirm the casualty figure however said they were grossly exaggerated, adding however that they are collaborating with the school to bring it under control.

While some students see no reason to fear as they presume cultist only attack opposing cult members others said they have become very cautious of their movements.

The Public Relations Officer of the University of Benin, Harris Osarenren said the institution has a committee for renunciation of secret cult membership and have also increased armed patrols in and around the institution to assure the students of their continued safety.

They however appealed to parents to give their children proper upbringing so they can heed the advice to desist from joining secret cults.
