Google Launches Internet Balloons

Google has launched "Project Loon", a scheme aimed at sending internet signals to  people across the globe through balloons.

The project was launched in Christchurch, New Zealand with 30 helium-filled balloons transmitting internet signals to some 50 volunteer households from the sky.

Project leader Mike Cassidy, said engineers hoped it would provide cheaper internet connections in undeveloped and developing parts of the world and transmit internet signals to areas that have lost communications due to earthquakes and storms.

The wind-driven balloons are currently floating 20 kilometers above the ground and are designed to remain airborne for more than three months.
