Police, Robber, Killed In Bank Robbery In Lagos

A new generation Bank in the Ogba axis of Lagos was on Thursday raided by armed robbers, numbering about 16, killed two policemen and wounding three others during a gun battle which lasted for 15 minutes.

However the Police said only one of their men was killed, while a member of the robbery gang was gunned down.

The Police in a statement said that the robbers stormed the Bank at about 3.00am in two vehicles, and tied up the security guards at the bank before firing some shots at the Automated Teller Machine.

But on sighting the policemen, some members of the gang who were stationed outside the Bank reportedly opened fire, and this lead to a duel, at the end of which one policeman was killed.

The identity of the policeman was given as Inspector Nafiu.
It was learnt that the armed gangs succeeded in carting away some undisclosed amount of money.

Spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, Ms. Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident.
She said: "Around 3am, on Thursday, about 16 armed robbers stormed the bank, tied the guards and made for the ATM.
"Policemen on patrol went to carry out a routine check on the bank, but as one of the policemen was alighting, the robbers opened fire, and he died.
"The policemen engaged the robbers in a gun duel and many of them sustained bullet wounds. The robbery was foiled, but the robbers escaped with wounds.

"An AK-47 rifle with 40 rounds of ammunition was recovered at the scene as well as the gas cylinder and cutting materials.
